Hearst Magazines is seeking an innovative and tech-savvy data leader with a strong understanding of the advertising industry, a record of data-driven transformative change and the ability to drive the future of our data layer for digital advertising products. The advertising business at Hearst Magazines must meet the needs of a wide array of clients, while contributing to a premium product experience.
This leader will join us at an exciting time. You will be responsible for partnering with leadership across sales, insights, product, and engineering leadership to build the infrastructure, data integrity, and output for measurement and analysis of our ad products. You will be responsible for how we scale our data layer and deliver on improvements in measurement and optimization to enhance the advertiser experience and become a more efficient data-driven business.
This role will lead a cross-functional group of data engineers, data analysts, and program managers responsible for capturing, extracting, improving quality, and joining with data sets to define reusable datasets for multiple stakeholders. You have responsibility for driving data priorities, design, execution and results. In addition, you have responsibility in improving our A/B experiment capabilities by reviewing experiments and ensuring we are driving the most value out of the experiments we run.
The Senior Director, Advertiser Data Business Intelligence & Applied Science will report to the VP, Data Product will be responsible for and working closely within and outside of the Data team being the primary liaison with advertising business. The mission is to build our ad data source of truth, as well as improve the quality and relevancy of our ad monetization experiments. Relevant problems include measuring ad delivery and monetization with content experience and measuring impact on advertiser performance KPIs. As our content experiences become more personalized, the dynamic measurement becomes more complex.
Your work will include both the data and software engineering needed that can support the scale of interactions from our global footprint, working with fellow engineering teams to instrument existing data sources, as well as create a newly formed view of advertising data to outline the roadmap to using the insights to improve our ad products and run future experiments. The goal is to reduce the burden for stakeholders with consistent, accessible and data less prone to errors.
As a data leader who partners with other product team members running A/B experiments, you are responsible for reviewing hypotheses, how experiments will measure success, and analyze experiment results and summaries for macro takeaways.
As the most senior data leader for advertising data, you will work cross-functionally across the organization being an expert in advertising data, aligning to advertising team stakeholders, and delivering data sets that are scalable and usable within the technology of the data product organization.
This is an ideal role for a data leader who enjoys being the first to engage in a new problem area, work across multiple existing data sources at a time, and working with product and design teams to iteratively develop new ideas. An ideal candidate has worked in both high scale environments as well as in smaller teams or on new initiatives, is innately curious, willing to dive deep into technical details and designs, loves analyzing large scale data patterns, strong communication skills, and has a track record of successfully building new platforms and tools.
Resonsibilities:
Your day-to-day
• Manage the development lifecycle and roadmap for complex data plumbing projects, including scope assessment and high-level estimation.
• Work with principal engineers on your team to define the technical standards and tooling to support the team as it scales.
• Collaborate with sales, finance, revenue operations, and insights teams to identify product needs and prioritize for roadmaps.
• Analyze complex datasets used to guide decisions regarding macro impacts of our advertising products
• Manage the continual intake and output of data to determine how products behave and what new products are possible.
• Partner with product managers running A/B experiments to review experiment set up, and analyze experiments results.
• Communicate progress with executives and facilitate discussions to resolve issues identified during development.
Qualifications:
About you
No two projects are alike, nor are two candidates. The following experiences are common within your peer group, but not strict requirements.
• History of working in at-scale digital advertising environments, either building data infrastructure to support them, or as part of a product-engineering-operations partnership.
• Strong technical design and architecture skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical decisions to nontechnical audiences.
• Large-scale data analysis experience (terabytes to petabytes), including machine learning, natural language processing, and visualization.
• Experiment A/B analysis to draw conclusions from complex datasets
• Organizational skills needed to track and monitor multiple projects simultaneously.
• 7 years' experience managing technical teams in multiple cultures and product focus areas.
• In-depth understanding of web-scale instrumentation, analytics, and data engineering, including the data pipeline and analytics tools.
• A bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent real-life experience.
• Masters or PhD degree in Applied Mathematics or Statistics
The base salary for this role is between $200,000 and $250,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
