Overview (Why This Role?)
We are seeking a passionate and enthusiastic Senior Design System Engineer to drive the design system team, build a performant, scalable design system that supports our mobile-first web applications and overall platform, help create best-in-class digital experiences to connect our audience with world-renowned magazine brands using a modern JavaScript stack. You will be accountable for the vision, roadmap, build, and implementation of Hearst Magazine's UI components, design and engineering tools and work on the app that is the first point of contact for the 150 million people we reach through our iconic and diverse brands mentioned above. And that's just the United States; our global reach is even larger. Our technology, tools, services, and solutions touch hundreds of millions of lives by driving experiences and growing businesses. Our engineers, product managers, data scientists, and designers build a suite of products to lead the way in shaping and managing the future of publishing.
You'll join a diverse, supportive community of engineers creating a modern content technology stack - built from the ground up - to give our clients and users tools that enable them to tell incredible stories and run their businesses more effectively. We use modern web technologies like JavaScript, Typescript, Node.js, GraphQL, React, and Python. We're building an open, service-oriented platform driven by APIs, and we believe in crafting simple, elegant solutions to complex technological and product problems. Our platform is built on AWS and Kubernetes with deployments automated through Slack bots.

Key Responsibilities (What You Are Doing)
• Develop, maintain and enhance our design system, including a library of reusable components, design patterns, UI guidelines with Figma and internal design system tools across our platform.
• Work with design system team members through implementation details, ensuring alignment with project goals.
• Collaborate and support designers and engineers to build scalable platforms to support the front-end teams in building and creating user-centric digital experiences.
• Relentlessly simplify and distill complex processes into intuitive and elegant UI
• Innovate by questioning and refining existing processes or establishing new ones.
• Conduct regular peer code reviews, ensuring high standards of quality.
• Identify, monitor, and tackle technical debt and seek out areas for optimization.
Qualifications (What We're Looking For)
• Work Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a relevant role.
• Attitude: Possess a positive and empathetic approach to teamwork and problem-solving.
• Technical Proficiency: Skilled in full-stack JavaScript development, solid UI/UX and design knowledge, proficient in design tools like figma and understanding of design patterns and design tokens
• Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of design systems' best practices.
• To be at the forefront of Design System thinking and introduce new methods, tools, and technical developments to the team
• Ability to effectively collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers
• Learning Mindset: Demonstrated eagerness to learn and embrace continuous improvement.
• Interest and working experience in front-end development will be considered an added advantage.
• This is a hybrid position based in New York City, with an in-office requirement of four days per week.

The base salary for this role is between $133,000 - $150,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
