Job Description
On any given day at Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology, we're reimagining ways to create magical viewing experiences for the world's most beloved stories while also transforming our media business for the future. Whether that's evolving our streaming and digital products in new and immersive ways, powering worldwide advertising and distribution to enhance flexibility and efficiency, or delivering Disney's unmatched entertainment and sports content, every day is a moment to make a difference to partners and to hundreds of millions of people around the world.

A few reasons why we think you'd love working here:
• Building the future of Disney's media: DE&E Technologists are designing and building the infrastructure that will power our media, advertising, and distribution businesses for years to come.
• Reach & Scale: The products and platforms this group builds and operates delight millions of consumers every minute of every day – from Disney+ and Hulu, to ABC News and Entertainment, to ESPN and ESPN+, and much more.
• Innovation: We develop and implement groundbreaking products and techniques that shape industry norms and enhance how audiences experience sports, entertainment & news.

Media Engineering is an innovative organization that is focused on providing the best possible video playback experience, art, and metadata to customers around the world, powered by exceptional technology. This strategic work requires streamlining and repurposing technology across different business and distribution channels – including streaming, linear, and theatrical – so that technology can ebb and flow across the needs of the business.

The Playback Quality Optimization team plays a meaningful role in managing the media experience of our customers on Disney+ and more. Our products are embedded directly into video players and oversee media playback, making Quality of Experience decisions in real-time that influence what users see and hear. To meet business and customer needs, the team analyzes information collected about how each and every playback performs and applies those findings to continually refine and tune every customer's experience.

As a Software Engineer, this role will be responsible for contributing to our high-impact, customer-facing, needle-moving project as well as collaborating with other teams to develop tooling needed to enhance and measure the success of that project. It is ideal for a well-rounded engineer who is excited by the opportunity to demonstrate technical acumen, has a track record of technical excellence, wants to dive deep into the mechanics of streaming video, and thrives in a highly distributed and collaborative environment.

Technologies we use as a team include Rust, Typescript, and Python (Pandas/NumPy).

Basic Qualifications
• 3+ years experience in software development
• Proficiency in either Rust or TypeScript (Full-Stack) and the respective ecosystems
• Proficiency in React/Redux for developing User Interfaces
• Track record of delivering complex projects
• Proven dedication to 24/7 system reliability and availability
• Excellent communication skills
• Highly organized
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Streaming Video Playback, including protocols like HLS
• Developed and shipped software for consumer devices, eg mobile phones, game consoles, smart speakers, smart TVs
• Experience developing in embedded or resource constrained environments
• Experience with WASM, Python, Swift, or Brightscript
