Job Description

Dana Hall School seeks candidates for the position of Director of Technical Theatre.

The individual in this position will be accountable for:

Classroom Teaching

  • Teaching two year-long technical theatre classes—one in the Middle School and one in the Upper School—covering technical theatre skills, including practical shop work and set, lighting, projection, and sound

Production

  • Collaborating with students and Performing Arts Department faculty in creating Dana Hall School’s vision for each production, includingthree Upper School plays, two Middle School plays, several major public performances each year, including dance, theatre, and choral music events, as well as various school-wide events and performances
  • Designing and building sets and implementing lighting and sound for all performances in the Middle and Upper Schools
  • Overseeing all tech week rehearsals, performance nights and strikes
  • Instructing and mentoring student crew during productions

Facilities Management

  • Overseeing Performing Arts facilities, including Bardwell Auditorium
  • Creating, implementing, and enforcing safety protocols and procedures
  • Operating, maintaining, and safeguarding the technical assets of all performing arts facilities, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, scenery equipment, and maintenance of stage facilities
  • Maintaining equipment

Candidates must: have a Bachelor's degree; have at least 3-5 years of demonstrated excellence and experience in theatre production, preferably in both professional and school settings; be highly organized with a strong capability for logistics, problem solving, and scheduling, as well as possessing an ability to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and model professional working relationships with performing arts faculty members; be able to work safely with the tools, on ladders and lifts, and around electricity; possess significant set-building experience, including drafting, carpentry, scenic painting, and welding, as well as experience and interest in current theatrical technology applications, including Vectorworks, AutoCAD, QLab, and Adobe Creative Suite; hold certification in operation of a Genie Lift and be able to lift, carry, and move at least 40 lbs. repeatedly.

Successful candidates must be creative, curious, kind, and detail-oriented with strong organizational, communication and executive skills. They should have an ability to work and multi-task effectively both independently and collaboratively in an active school environment, as well as possess a willingness to add value to all aspects of community life at the School.

This role is a 10-month academic-year, part-time position including benefits reporting to the Director of the Middle School and Director of the Upper School. This role’s responsibilities entail 32 hours per week on average when school is in session.After school, evening and weekend hours are expected.
