Manager, Analytics Engineer

The Job

CNN Digital's Analytics Engineering Manager would build and lead a team of analytics engineers, developing subject matter expertise, and collaborate closely with Product, Growth, Marketing, and other Technical teams that use our massive data lake and infrastructure. Your goal is to strategize ways to synthesize our data-lake into ''business-ready'' data sets and pipelines and create a self-service environment that other cross-functional teams can leverage for deriving meaningful metrics and insights.

You will be a great fit for this role if you have experience as a backend or data engineer yourself, have managed engineers before, and are eager to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders - across content, growth, marketing, and revenue - to solve complex business questions with the application of data and analytics.

The Daily
• Grow and lead a team of analytics engineers to own CNN Digital's data modeling strategy by collaborating with other leaders in the organization
• Work closely with internal team members and product managers to establish the long term vision, create an executable roadmap, and remove barriers to success.
• Set a high bar of technical excellence for the team by evangelizing engineering best practices, participating in PR reviews of the analytics engineering pipeline code, and providing guidance on sound data architecture and design
• Build consensus among stakeholders, and resolving disagreements without sacrificing trust.
• Design and implement logical data models and transformations to support flexible self-service reporting of company core metrics.
• Synthesize large volumes of data and complex concepts into clear insights and frameworks, quickly and accurately.
• Train team members and colleagues on best practices for data visualization (e.g. MixPanel, Amplitude, Tableau, and Looker) and help others be successful stewards of our tools
• Implement and automate the data models in DBT and Airflow in a way that promotes data reuse and discovery
• Continually research and improve new methods and enhancements to our analytics platform and visualizations to drive innovative, data-driven story-telling.

The Essentials
• 6+ years experience as a software engineer with focus on data systems
• Excellence in managing, building, and hiring teams with 3+ years of managing and mentoring direct reports and setting performance goals
• Expert working knowledge of Python programing language, SQL, and data modeling, with the ability to understand the context of a business question and build a holistic answer
• Experience modeling data in a warehouse such as Snowflake, Redshift, and or BigQuery
• Experience with Airflow or another type of DAG scheduler
• Experience with DBT(Data Build Tool) or similar data modeling tool
• Working knowledge of visualization tools such as Tableau or Looker (MixPanel or Amplitude would be a plus)
• Experience working with a distributed team in a cross-functional collaboration
• Strong leadership skills and experience developing and leading technical strategy
• Professional experience developing and executing on a strategy for data modeling and reporting in the modern data stack – we use Snowflake, DBT, Mixpanel, and Looker
