Job Description
Part-time Data & Graphics Editor (6-month contract)

The CNN Digital Data and Graphics team is looking for a Data & Graphics Editor to continue expanding its innovative visual storytelling. This will be a part-time position where we'll need the editor to commit for 3 or 4 days during the week.

The Data & Graphics Editor works closely with the Senior Data and Graphics Editor to develop compelling visuals to contextualize the news and cover stories about the most important issues of our time. They will help us find, report on, analyze and visualize data across beats, including breaking news and the intersections of policy, business, climate, health, inequity and more.

You should have experience reporting, working with data visualisation and telling stories creatively, whether that's through dataviz, interactive features, webGL, or something else entirely. This is a position where you can pitch and develop your own stories as well as collaborate with others to create high impact visual and data-driven journalism.

We're looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic visual journalist with a 'can-do' attitude. They must be an organized strong team player with a passion for design, infographics, illustrations, as well as an interest in news delivery. They will need a keen eye for detail, strong visual design skills and a good understanding of relevant software.

We want someone who is proactive, brings new ideas to the table and is obsessive about emerging trends across digital journalism, typography and illustration.

Responsibilities:
• Create graphics and visuals, infographics, maps, charts, interactives, visual explainers, and other visual storytelling formats for breaking news stories and medium to long-term features.
• Pitch, report, and edit visual stories and graphics.
• Work with geographic and mapping resources.
• Plan proactively and identify strong graphics opportunities for the data and graphics stories and stories across other desks.
• Review visualizations and graphics to ensure they uphold rigorous standards.
• Work closely with the global Data and Graphics team to present the visual work to the larger project team, as well as to internal stakeholders beyond the project team.

Requirements:
• A desire to push visual storytelling forward and the ability to think creatively about how we use graphics and data in the service of journalism. You put the journalism first, have impeccable news judgment, and are always asking ''what's the best way to tell this story?''
• Considerable experience with information design, data visualization, and visual storytelling.
• Experience working with some combination of modern data and visualization tools, such as Illustrator, ai2html, Figma, HTML, CSS, (JavaScript and related libraries are a plus).
• Solid skills with Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
• Some familiarity with modern mapping tools (Arc, QGIS, MapBox, Maps4News, etc.).
• Excellent communication skills, as comfortable walking through a story pitch with editors as you are working closely with colleagues to create and shape a graphics project.
• A reader-first perspective and a strong commitment to multiplatform storytelling.
• Good level of written and spoken English.

The Nice-To-Haves
• Digital illustration tools
• Experience with Python, SQL, Excel, etc.
• The command line and Git
• Understands the role of UX within the product development process
