The City of Torrance is recruiting for a Stage Manager to join the General Services Team!


The Department

The mission of the Department of General Services is to provide quality services that support City departments in a manner which enable them to carry-out their community missions; to provide these services in a cost-effective and efficient manner which best serves the operational needs of City departments and the community. Responsibilities of the General Services Department include: Airport Administration, Building Maintenance, Central Services, Cultural Arts Center Administration, Custodial, Fleet Services, Graffiti Abatement Program, HVAC/Electrical, and Warehouse.

The Division

The Torrance Cultural Arts Center includes the Toyota Meeting Hall, the Torino Festival Plaza, the Ken Miller Assembly Room, the Ken Miller Auditorium, the James R. Armstrong Theatre, the George Nakano Theatre, the Pine Wind Japanese Garden, the garden rooms, and the Torrance Art Museum. Additionally, the Center houses 4 dance studios with sprung hard wood floors, a large ceramics facility, a jewelry making studio, 3 art-making studios, and a music/drama room. The complex is managed by the City's General Services Department through the Torrance Cultural Arts Center Administrative Offices.

The Position

Under direction from the Theater Technical Director, the Stage Manager acts as Stage Supervisor, and as a point of contact for rental clients during rental events. This position delegates and oversees duties of Theater Technicians, and assumes responsibility for set-up, operation, and strike of all staging and related technical equipment to complete a successful operation of rental events.


The Stage Manager maintains skills and up-to-date knowledge of theater equipment, maintains the theater including light equipment, sound equipment, rigging equipment, fly rail system, and stage, performs maintenance and repair work of all production lighting systems, low-voltage control systems, and various building electrical components, and acts as an advisor to Torrance Cultural Arts Center staff or technical theater related items.


QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  • A bachelor's degree in technical theater or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required
  • Minimum of three years experience in technical production in a large arts complex
  • Some experience in management is necessary

Ideal Candidate:

In addition to the minimum qualifications, the most successful candidate will possess:

  • Supervisory Skills, including: hiring, training, counseling and disciplining.
  • Public Contact/Interpersonal Skills, including: renter relations/marketing, and City employee and officials interaction
  • Theater Technical Skills, including: Modern lighting and sound equipment appropriate for theater use, set construction and rigging systems-rigging certification preferred.

Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions:

Physical Requirements

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to stoop; to reach; to stand; to walk and sit for extended periods of time; to push and/or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds; to lift and carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds. On a frequent basis, essential duties of the position may require the ability to climb stairs and ladders, and to kneel and/or crouch.

Work Environment

Essential duties of this classification are primarily performed in a dynamic theatre environment. Duties may include operations in other Torrance Cultural Arts Center facilities and/or off-site locations.
