WCBS-TV and WLNY-TV, a ViacomCBS owned and operated television duopoly has an immediate opening for a creative leader in Engineering Management. The Chief Engineer is a key position reporting to the Director of Broadcast Operations & Engineering. The Chief Engineer will be responsible to provide leadership in designing, maintaining, and ensuring reliable production in the delivery of streaming media and broadcast products from The CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan.

Leadership:

Primary responsibilities include leading and managing a technology team to design and innovate technology project delivery, daily maintenance of hardware and software systems, as well as technical design.

This opportunity will help manage and develop capital project designs and implementation plans. This position will create work plans, timelines, and budgets. Providing hands on operational troubleshooting of technical issues related to audio, video, transmission, IP encoding, cloud control applications, QC testing, risk mitigation planning, and workflows for automation, on various technology platforms.

You will lead a team of engineers in the daily support of news and content production, including studios, control rooms, remote content acquisition, streaming playout systems, I-News and MOS gateway servers, multiple V-LANS, remote sites, microwave systems, encoding, HD-SDI routing, LiveU, Dejero, PSIP, guide data, Sony ELC automation, Masstech archive systems, lighting controllers, and intercom systems.

The position will manage and maintain several Gates Air UHF solid state transmitter with new Antennas, Recon/StatMon control systems, and fiber STL systems. Knowledge of Digital Alert Systems EAS equipment and Harmonic TS encoders with multiple sub-channels is a must. RF engineering knowledge is helpful.

Candidates will possess knowledge of technical configuration and metadata required for content delivery to digital media, encoding systems and ATSC platforms. Knowledge of Grand Alliance DTV systems is a plus.

Creativity:

This position will solve technical issues related to audio and video assets and workflows that occur across the digital workflow and distribution chain. The position will collaborate with vendors, selecting and ordering equipment, orchestrating and scheduling engineering staff for daily operation. Providing new technical and workflow designs as well as managing the maintenance team within the studio and field environment.

The position of Chief Engineer will assist the Dir. of BO&E with implementing QC processes to improve broadcast products, flag issues, and reduce content downtime. They will participate in the creation of disaster recovery plans, as well as maintain FCC compliance in operation, transmission licenses, EAS systems, and closed captioning. The position will support and conduct testing related to back-up systems, identifying and correcting shortfalls. Experience with bargaining unit technical labor contracts is essential.

Business:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to provide constructive coaching and motivating feedback to staff on practices, tools, and performance, related to managing a team of system engineers.

A Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience, in a technology field is required with 5+ years of staff management or field service experience in a systems environment related to ATSC systems, streaming media production, studio, and RF broadcasting.
