Director, Payroll Services
Job Purpose
The Director, Payroll Services is responsible for leadership, oversight and facilitation of all payroll operations, payroll tax, organization and league reporting, including: the accurate and timely preparation of wages to all employees; proper coding and transfer of payroll transactions to the general ledger; player payments in accordance with the CBA; monitor regulatory and legal changes to payroll and tax disciplines; evaluate and implement organizational/department strategy and technology; and provide back up and troubleshooting to department team members.
This position and department are new as until now, the Diamondbacks have always outsourced all payroll operations. The Director, Payroll Services will be part of a team of leaders that will implement all positions and department structure for a go-live cut-over date of January 1, 2025.
Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties:
• Oversee the processing of semi-monthly payroll for Full Time, Part Time, Major League Players, and Seasonal Staff.
Oversee the processing of a bi-weekly payroll for Minor League Players. This includes but is not limited to rate changes, new hires, terminations, allowance payments (car, housing, relocation), bonus payments, ST Allowances (housing, meals), appearance fees, post season shares, taxation of fringe benefits, setup of deductions for benefits in conjunction with the People & Culture Department. (Examples: health insurance, supplemental insurances, flex spending accounts and health savings accounts, garnishments/support orders, 401(k), etc.)
• Oversee payroll tax process. This includes but is not limited to making timely deposits, preparation of accurate and timely payroll tax returns, and preparation of w-2s.
• Supervise Payroll Department and provide guidance, training, and development.
• Provide back up to regular processors/specialists in time of need (illness, vacation, etc.).
• Records and processes general ledger transactions in collaboration with the Finance Department.
• Work closely with People & Culture Department in all aspects of employment benefits and related reporting.
• Recognize the challenges of transitioning from an outsourced payroll service to a fully functional in-house payroll department, providing input and direction along the way while considering organizational strategy and culture.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

• Knowledge of the business of sports and events and the related systems used to schedule, pay and report.
• Good written and verbal communication skills between departments and with player financial representatives.
• Knowledge and experience with Ultipro/UKG payroll software is strongly preferred.
• Previous experience supervising others in a similar capacity is required.
Budget Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the creation and operation of an annual Payroll Department budget and providing periodic projections of the results to the VP, Finance.
Experience/Education Requirements:
• 8-10 years payroll and finance experience including multi-jurisdiction tax knowledge.
• UKG, ABI, NetSuite, Workday Adaptive FP&A experience preferred.
• Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance or related field required.
• Computer knowledge including but not limited to Microsoft Excel and Word. Expert Excel capabilities needed in order to perform the function.
Physical Requirements:
• Occasional need to move equipment up to 20 pounds.
• On occasion the ability to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
