POSITION OVERVIEW

The Legal Intern will provide support to the Counsel while gaining insight into the inner workings of a nonprofit arts institution and the legal intricacies facing an evolving field. This role will work at least 12 hours a week during the 2024 summer semester. This internship will be 100% remote and the student selected must receive school credit for their service. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that our program will meet their school’s course requirements.

Working closely under the direction of Counsel, the Legal Intern supports Sundance Institute’s commitment to freedom of expression, equity, and support of all artists. The summer semester coincides with the Institute’s summer Labs.

This internship will focus on:
• Providing opportunities to learn how to support a nonprofit organization navigating an evolving field.
• Strengthening research skills through guided research projects.
• Attaining first-hand knowledge of the legal support required to plan a large-scale event.

Through this internship, the participant will…
• Work directly with our Counsel on legal research projects, along with other legal/business-related issues.
• Conduct research into the legal aspects of running a digital Festival, and researching and advising on our issued Grants and Collab programs.

Top priorities include but are not limited to…
• Analyzing contract templates and website language and recommending changes to key terms based on best practices and industry standards.
• Researching historical copyright of photos and artistic works in the Sundance Institute archive.
• Researching best practices for and helping develop a document retention policy.
• Creating a spreadsheet of media license agreements that lists assets and expiration dates.
• Developing trainings for meeting best practices.
• Meeting with and interviewing various internal constituents (Programming, Feature Film Program, Documentary Film Program, Collab, HR and others) to help streamline legal processes.
• Working with outside counsel regarding Sundance Institute’s registered trademarks.
• Completing analysis and writing as requested.

You have the following direct or transferable skill sets:
• Legal authorization to work in the United States.
• Must be a rising second or third year student currently working towards a JD at an accredited law school in the United States.
• Demonstrated academic achievement and interest in the arts.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work well in a collaborative environment.
• Sound judgment and ability to handle confidential matters with discretion.
• A strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple projects.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills:
• Enrolled in or have completed Entertainment Law Courses and involved in school’s Entertainment Law groups
