Technology Services Software Engineering, PBS KIDS Internship (Hybrid)

Corporate Area: PBS KIDS

Department: Product and Technology

Status: Internship/Full-Time/Hybrid

Supervisor Title: Senior Manager, Technology

Time Commitment: 40 hours/week, June 2023 – August 2023

Compensation: $15/hour for undergraduate students, $17/hour for graduate students

Position Overview:

Come work with PBS KIDS, Technology Services to build a recommendation engine for PBS KIDS content. Research, design, and build a system for content producers to build out playlists of related videos, articles, and games by topic using keywords. These playlists could be deployed to various distribution channels such as our website, video applications, and YouTube channel. You will learn about the media landscape by working with engineers and producers at PBS.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

We expect you to research recommendation algorithms, write software to ingest the PBS KIDS content model into an analytics workflow, work with various stakeholders to define successful playlist criteria, take part in code review, present findings to internal stakeholders. We expect you to be able to write software in a language like python, JavaScript, or rust. You also understand basic statistics to communicate with developers and internal stakeholders how correct the predictions made by the software are to the stated goals.

Requirements for success:
• Enrolled in college level computer science or related program for at least a year.

• An ability to write procedural code in python, JavaScript, or rust.

• A desire to learn about recommendation systems and techniques.

• An interest in graph data models.

• Effective communication skills.

We hope the intern experience will help you understand recommendation engines, methods for processing data, present findings, and learn about the modern media environment. We hope that by taking ownership of this project, you will gain skills by taking part in a unique software internship.
