Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Internship (Hybrid)

Corporate Area: Executive Office

Status: Internship/Full-Time/Hybrid

Supervisor Title: Senior Vice President, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Time Commitment: 40 hours/week, June 2023 – August 2023

Compensation: $15/hour for undergraduate students, $17/hour for graduate students

Position Overview:

The PBS DEI Office works to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion, which includes accessibility, belonging, and welcoming (together, ''DEI''). This work includes continued efforts to integrate DEI throughout the public media ecosystem; to enhance an environment of psychological safety so that everyone feels as though they are seen, heard and valued; to support a cohesive and collaborative workforce; to develop ongoing DEI education for the entire system; to be a role model of DEI in all aspects of programming, policies and processes; and to implement the requisite tools to measure and account for our success.

The DEI Intern will report to and work closely with the Senior DEI Coordinator, DEI Director and Senior Vice President of DEI to ensure smooth operations of the DEI Office and accomplish PBS's DEI strategic plan. To be successful in this role, candidates need a positive and holistic work style that inspires trust. The DEI Intern will provide support for the DEI Office, including but not limited to assisting with the coordination of DEI events and initiatives; preparing emails, presentations, virtual books and other correspondence; and collaborating with the DEI team on DEI research and analysis projects.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

The DEI Intern will:
• Coordinate, collaborate, and create with DEI Team, PBS employees and/or stakeholders outside of PBS staff to ensure successful completion of the DEI Strategic Plan.
• Research, write and finalize messaging, handbooks, letters, and other documentation for DEI team, including but not limited to PowerPoint slides and other graphics, written, video, and/or audio presentations.
• Assist with the coordination of all DEI events and initiatives such as cultural celebrations, professional development panels, networking opportunities, mentoring initiatives, team retreats, restorative circles, trainings, presentations, and conferences (e.g., drafting the topics, format and presentation of DEI events and initiatives; participating in mindfulness, storytelling events, and other DEI-related practices).
• Collaborate with ERG, DEI Advocates, and DEI Council Committee members to organize events and initiatives as requested.
• Research and contribute to the creation of resources on DEI best practices such as reports, presentations, infographics, etc.

Requirements for success:
• Candidates must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
• Background and/or interest in diversity, inclusion, equity, organizational change, public policy and management, multicultural studies, restorative practices, metrics and/or social justice.
• Certification in DEI a plus.
• Must live in the Washington, DC area.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including outstanding research, analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate needs and proactively address issues.
• Must be able to handle office of Head of DEI materials and information with 100% confidentiality and resilience.
• Professional demeanor with a high degree of discretion, judgment, tact, and poise.
• Experience with positive teambuilding, core competencies, restorative practices, and/or mindfulness techniques preferred
• Ability to work successfully both independently and in a team environment.
• A strong interest in the mission of public broadcasting and its business landscape.
• Strong typing and word processing skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software.
• A creative thinker: experience in filmmaking, video editing, and/or graphic design a plus.

Skills the Intern may gain:
• Increased knowledge and application of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices in the public media space.
• Increased knowledge of the public media system and PBS.
• Experience with restorative circles, design thinking, project management, collaboration, storytelling, public speaking and active listening
• Improved self-awareness, self-regulation, and emotional intelligence which are integral to DEI.
