Job Description
OVERVIEW

ABOUT THE ROLE

From day one, interns at NPR are given real-world, hands-on responsibilities. Working alongside top professionals in the field, interns do meaningful work across a variety of departments at NPR.

Across our organization, we're building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success.

Program Duration: May 30, 2023 – August 18, 2023 (dates may be flexible, depending on school requirements)

Legal interns are given substantive opportunities to gain experience and learn as members of the Office of the General Counsel (''OGC''). The OGC is responsible for providing high quality, cost-efficient, legal and related services to our NPR clients. The OGC offers challenging and diverse work assignments for legal interns as it provides legal assistance to all divisions of NPR. The OGC handles a wide variety of legal issues, including: FCC regulatory; First Amendment; Internet; intellectual property, including music rights, content licensing, copyright, and trademark; nonprofit tax; governance; technology, such as software licensing; employment and labor, including Title VII, labor relations and other aspects of the employer-employee relationship; and commercial and contract law, as well as contract review and research opportunities across all areas of the OGC's spectrum of work.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES

Legal interns should be prepared to contribute across all practice areas. Interns conduct legal research and prepare legal memoranda, contracts and other legal documents. They also have the opportunities to participate in client meetings, legislative and regulatory meetings, and other ''outside-the-library'' projects, such as observing legal proceedings and attending legal training sessions offered through the District of Columbia Bar Association or other local organizations.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Location: This internship may be fully remote, onsite at our Washington, DC office (subject to NPR's health and safety measures), or a hybrid version of the two.

Education: Applicants must be current students in an accredited law school program (1L, 2L, 3L, or LLM).

Course Credit: This internship is designed to be a learning experience for law students for which school credit must be obtained. Applicants must be able to comply with their school's requirements for academic credit.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Applicants should have relevant background experience, demonstrated interest in the OGC practice areas, and/or strong academic credentials and legal research and writing skills. We are interested in candidates with copyright experience, although that is not required.

SCHEDULE

NPR generally offers legal internships throughout the year. During the summer, law clerks are expected to work full time, 40 hours per week for 12 weeks. Fall and Spring internships can be on a part-time schedule (usually 15 - 20 hours per week depending on school requirements) or full-time schedule.

Application submissions for Office of the General Counsel Internship – Summer 2023 will close on March 15, 2023 at 11:59pm ET.
