OVERVIEW
Program Duration: October 6th, 2025 - April 17th, 2026
INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO:
Interns will receive hands-on experience and mentoring to build familiarity with modern coding practices, development workflows, and engineering standards. Training will include, but is not limited to:
• Direct mentorship from NPR's Digital Media Technology team
• Practical experience working within an Agile (Scrum) environment
• Exposure to NPR's digital products, platforms, and award-winning technologies
• Real-world experience with modern web development tools and frameworks, including:
• React, Redux
• PHP, MySQL
• CodeFresh
• Git and GitHub Actions
• Kubernetes
• AWS (including EKS)
Interns will work daily with a cross-functional team of talented professionals spanning engineering, product, and design. This collaborative environment offers an opportunity to contribute to the future of digital media while gaining industry-relevant experience that strengthens long-term career readiness.
Interns will have the opportunity to experience & support the work of the team in the following areas...
• Contribute to feature development for NPR.org
• Support NPR.org users through maintenance and production issue resolution
• Assist in quality assurance efforts, including testing and test plan creation
• Help scope and plan technical work, including new features, bug fixes, and urgent issues
• Participate in and help lead Agile ceremonies (stand-ups, sprint planning, retros, etc.)
• Offer constructive feedback on UI/UX designs
• All work of the intern is to be performed under the close supervision of the host team.
Our strongest internship candidates are passionate about digital product development, eager to solve technical challenges creatively, and driven by curiosity about how things work, both in technology and in the world at large. You should be comfortable managing your time and meeting deadlines, communicating effectively across digital and in-person formats, and working with accuracy both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
Required:
• Experience with at least one programming language and/or some exposure to web development
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Bonus Points For:
• Familiarity with any of the technologies or frameworks we commonly use, including:
• Front-end web development (especially using JavaScript, React, or Redux)
• Understanding of HTML5 and CSS3
• Back-end development experience or familiarity with PHP
• Working knowledge of MySQL or other databases
• Experience using Linux-based development environments
• Familiarity with Git or any version control system

EDUCATION:
• Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.
WORK LOCATION
• Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.
JOB TYPE
• This is a temporary (28-week) full time internship.
COMPENSATION
• Hourly Rate: The US based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $20.00 per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for internships across all US locations.
• Benefits: NPR provides interns with multiple benefits and amenities. Interns receive immediate eligibility to contribute electively to a Principal 403(b) retirement plan and access to the Transit Flexible Spending Account for commuter benefits. Interns working out of DC HQ enjoy free access to on-site Cigna medical providers, no cost fitness center access, as well as bike facilities and garage parking available onsite. Interns can access the Employee Assistance Program which provides confidential counseling services as well as Business Travel Accident coverage and Global Guardian membership and they also qualify for Signal Financial Federal Credit Union membership. NPR interns who work 30 or more hours per week are eligible for holiday pay. This includes pay for the company's 10 observed holidays plus one floating holiday per year. Interns automatically earn 3.08 hours of sick leave each pay period without any waiting time restrictions and can utilize paid administrative leave as necessary. Interns have access to professional development opportunities and can benefit from flexible work hours and telecommuting options.
SCHEDULE
• The standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Core team hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. To get the most out of the internship and ensure access to support, interns are encouraged to work during these core hours when most of the team is online and available.
• Participation in our daily team scrum from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. is required on the days you are working. As a fully remote team, this meeting is an important daily touchpoint to align, share progress, and stay connected.
• We offer flexibility in scheduling beyond core hours, but interns must work a minimum of 20 hours per week in order to gain the full benefit of the internship experience.
