Job Description
The Role
Our global Netflix members have access to a rich collection of movies, TV shows, games, as well as live contents. Netflix is also a global studio - besides licensing content from third parties, we produce our own movies and TV shows. It is a big undertaking to run our production at scale and with high efficiency.
As a Video Algorithms Intern, you will be actively involved in the development of a new video quality assessment tool aimed at the studio production use case. Video encoding (compression) seeks to reduce the data size so that the files can be easily transferred between locations. On the other hand, video encoding may introduce undesirable artifacts. How to strike a good balance between compression and quality is key. A highly accurate video quality metric allows the tradeoff to be quantified and optimized.
The internship project will involve developing a video quality metric by data collection, feature development, model training, subjective validation, and more. You should be familiar with the human visual system, subjective testing procedures, video encoding and formats, and machine learning.
About You:
• Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in a technical field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Statistics - with a graduation date between December 2025 - Fall 2026.
• Enjoy working in complex, dynamic, and fast moving environments.
• Articulate communicator across written and verbal communication mediums.
• Strong software development skills and feel comfortable with software engineering best practices (e.g. version control, testing, code review, etc.).
• Successful track record in Video Algorithms and Coding research or adjacent fields (Computer Graphics, Video Processing, Computer Vision, Video Quality).
• Able to program fluently in Python.
Bonus Points:
• Experience with software performance optimization on constrained hardware.
• Involvement in open-source multimedia projects (ffmpeg, etc).
• Be able to program in C++/C.
