Paid Intern

KSNW is looking for an up-and-coming journalist eager to get their first break into the industry and contribute to the daily broadcast and digital news product for KSN. This is a part-time position, perfect for current college students looking to develop their skills. Position responsibilities will vary with schedules and assignments but could include writing for broadcast and digital platforms, shooting and editing video, managing the assignment desk and monitoring emergency scanners, contributing to newscasts and helping to assist in daily news gathering and development. The right candidate will be driven to succeed, have a strong attention to detail and an eagerness to learn all the aspects of broadcast and digital journalism in Wichita. Essential Duties
o Evaluate news leads and tips to develop and pitch story ideas that are relevant to the local community
o Gather and verify accurate information about newsworthy events by interview, investigation, or observation for digital and newscast presentations
o Produce accurate, complete and compelling news copy on deadline
o
Organize material, shoot and edit video, prioritize and write stories based on the details and information obtained
o Use various digital and social platforms to give updates and share news stories with the public
o
Organize, rewrite, supplement, publish stories from sister stations and news wires
o Discuss issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions
o Monitor assignments and emergency communication to dispatch crews to cover spot news
o Check reference materials such as news files or public records to obtain relevant facts
o Interact with viewers/users on social media sites
o Perform special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements & Skills
o Progress towards Bachelor's degree in Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
o Fluency in English required -- Bilingual Spanish is preferred
o Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
o Proficiency with research skills
o Excellent reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and organizational skills
o Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
o Promote teamwork and maintain attitude of cooperation with all station personnel
o Flexibility to work multiple shifts including nights and weekends (if a current college student, academic schedule will be considered)
o
Operate newsroom computer systems, editing and camera equipment

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MENTAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: High stress environment with deadline pressures. Travel may be required. Position requires the transport of equipment weighing up to 60 lbs. Position often requires work in extreme outdoor temperatures. A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.
