Job Description

The Technical Operations Manager will work rotational shifts to support 24 hour / 7 day a week media network operation. Their primary responsibility will be to support Operations in the technical execution of Disney Media Networks. This will include Disney Channel Networks, Freeform, FX Networks, National Geographic Networks, and ABC Television Network and all related streaming networks. The Technical Operations Manager should be familiar with all aspects of television operations. A successful candidate in this role must be able to maintain a high-level attention to detail across several streams and systems while being able to prioritize tasks and requests. Must be able to work under deadline pressure.

Primary responsibility will be to ensure Operations equipment is set up and ready for staff to use as well as provide the first line of technical support to Operations. This may include the setup, routing, testing and validation of various devices needed on any given day. Technical Operations Managers are highly skilled, experienced positions that should have expert understanding of the technical aspects and equipment used in television playout.

Responsibilities:
• Oversight of all network origination equipment and setups on the day of air in a 24/7 environment.
• Setup and test equipment for Operations needs that will include:
• Video Routers and Switchers
• Rasterizers and Audio Decoders
• Graphics Devices
• Communication Panels
• Multiview Monitors
• Closed Caption and Video Data Encoders
• Troubleshoot basic technical issues reported by Operations peers; Escalate as appropriate to engineering department and act as liaison during resolution of issue
• Express technical and operational issues clearly to engineering and management through well written reports
• Daily communication with our engineering partners providing them with technical operations updates, issues and upcoming plans
• Author Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and document department processes; seek opportunities to improve existing processes
• Conduct ad-hoc analyses to support operational/technology decision making and special projects
• Build and maintain high quality relationships with all internal & external partners
• Flexibility to work all shifts composing a 24/7 day; this would include overnights, weekends, holidays and special events
• Work constructively and respectfully with fellow team and department members to achieve a common goal while always upholding the values of The Walt Disney Company
• Provide input for the implementation of technological upgrades and projects furthering the vision of the Facility

Basic Qualifications:
• 2+ years' experience in live television
• Strong television operations or engineering background
• Expert knowledge of television network operations that may include but is not limited to: traffic planning and timing calculation, automation systems, signal flow, measurement tools and signal elements
• Extensive experience operating video switchers, keyers and other various playout devices
• Expert understanding of video formats (SD, HD, UHD, HD-HDR and video and audio standards (SMPTE)
• Expert understanding of video routing systems and analysis tools (waveform monitors, rasterizers and audio meters)
• Extensive experience using playout automation systems
• Understanding of SCTE 104 and SCTE 35 messaging standards
• Basic understanding of traditional video encoding and decoding (ASI) as well as newer standards of compressed and uncompressed IP video transport (SMPTE 2022, SMPTE 2110, HLS, MPEG-TS via multicast, RTMP, DASH)
• Basic understanding of editing software functions
• Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office (esp. Outlook and Excel)
• Proactive problem-solving and critical thinking skills
• Must be able to communicate calmly and effectively to team while working in high pressure and stressful situations
• Must be self-motivated, organized and communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing
• Strong interest in current industry technologies and developments

Preferred Qualifications:
• Non-linear editing experience or experience with EVS, Evertz Dreamcatcher or other live edit platforms
• Strong interest in current industry technologies and developments
• Familiarity with streaming media platforms (e.g., Netflix, Fire TV, Hulu, etc.)
• Basic understanding of IP networking and associated hardware (e.g. firewalls, routers, switches, load balancers, xWDM gear)
• Understanding of computer network architecture, theory and protocols (TCP/IP, UDP/IP, 7 layers of OSI, DNS, DHCP)
• Understanding of basic file systems and transfer protocols
• Basic Linux command line skills
• Experience coding in one or more computer languages
• Experience converting among decimal, binary and hexadecimal

Required Education

Bachelor's degree or certificate in a field related to media, broadcast, engineering, communications OR equivalent work experience
