The Job
Systems Engineer II

The Daily
• Developing and maintaining the Webfarm Services and Architectures with specific attention to availability, performance, capacity planning, and architecture design and implementation.
• Developing and maintaining operational control and management systems to support Webfarm operations including alarms, alerts, and triage; infrastructure and content change control and load management.
• Leading medium-scale technical projects, working with CNN staff and vendors to gather requirements, determine solutions, and then implement those solutions.
• Receives general instructions for new responsibilities from more senior team members.
• Technical leadership for more junior team members.
• Evaluates and/or recommends purchases.
• Serving in an on-call rotation.

The Essentials
• 3 - 5 years of systems administration experience
• Comfortable with most aspects of UNIX systems administration; for example, configuration of HTTP servers, mail systems, system installation and configuration, printing systems, fundamentals of security, installing 3rd party software.
• Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts; can configure NFS and NIS, can use nslookup or dig to check information in the DNS, understands basic routing concepts.
• A solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understanding paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts.
• Ability to write scripts using and scripting language (Perl, Tk, shell, Python)
• Moderate first-hand experience using Web related technologies which include: HTML, PERL, CGI scripting, JAVA, and NSAPi.
• Ability to interpret various Web server operational characteristics and accurately determine the presence of a problem.
• Once a problem is discovered, ability to identify possible solutions, select the most appropriate solution, and implement that solution in a timely manner.
• Strong verbal and communication skills; capable of writing purchase justifications, training others in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with upper management.
• Interdependent problem-solving skills, self-directed.
• Degree in computer science or related field is desired, not required.
• Significant programming in applicable language.
• Solaris 2.5 or later experience.
• Broad based knowledge of UNIX and open standards operating systems.
• Knowledge on Internet network protocols, standards, and systems. Familiarity with Microsoft NT Server.
