Job Description
Designer, Eater (Temporary)

We are looking for a graphic designer to join the team at Eater who is innovative, tenacious, grounded and excited by the idea of creating thoughtful and intriguing visuals that complement our storytelling across mediums.

Eater covers local restaurant news, reports on national food trends, and provides service through travel guides, cooking content, documentary-style video, and social-first stories, as well as live events. We're seeking a graphic designer to work with our Design Director in providing design solutions for this wide array of content and honing the visual direction of the Eater brand along the way.

The right candidate is always looking for ways to further their technical design skills, is adept at time managing their own project load, and is laser-focused on details, but is eager to approach design challenges from a variety of disciplines.

WHO WE ARE

Eater, the national food publication with outlets across North America and the UK, is at the forefront of reporting on the restaurant industry, shaping food culture with its award-winning journalism and programming, and telling people where to eat with its beloved maps and guides.

Eater is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what's now, what's next, and what's possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Take design direction and execute on the vision of the Design Director on various projects including branding, editorial illustrations, infographics, event designs, digital collateral designs, social media asset builds, etc.
• Build Ceros-based designs. Design 9-12 block landing pages with animations, to the level of these examples: Punch Martini Package, Eater Mall Food Madness, Punch Wine Package, Eater Best New Restaurants 2022
• Occasionally execute digital design. Produce newsletter designs, ad hoc social assets, larger features-focused social designs, web assets (hero/header/lead images, thumbnail illustrations, sub-brand logos, wireframes, layout mockups, etc.) when Designer is unable/bandwidth is overloaded
• Maintain brand standards. Consistently assess your design solutions with a critical eye, ensuring that they are innovative and intriguing, without straying from the visual brand standards
• Collaborate. Work closely and collaborate with reporters, editors, video team and the Design Director, bringing multiple possible design solutions to the table and ensuring that creative needs are translated and executed appropriately and efficiently.
• Participate in design reviews. Accept and resolve critiques. Attend and participate in bi-weekly 1:1s, as well as project-specific reviews.
• Advocate for accessible design. Follow accessibility guidelines in your work.

WHO YOU ARE
• Ceros-Experienced Designer. You have at least 6 months experience and/or at least 2 examples of published work that involved a design-build in Ceros
• Design Program Fluency. Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, Acrobat, Lightroom, Adobe XD, etc.)
• Diligent with Time Management. You are exceptionally able to pace your workload, tracking on your tasks while surfacing progress with team members and managers at key checkpoints.
• Self-Starter. Able to take direction from Design Director, collaborate with Designer and editorial team, as well as self-motivate to take projects through to completion autonomously
• Knowledge of HTML, CSS, SCSS and prior, if minimal, experience coding web designs is a major plus.
• Prior experience building animations and working with video times to integrate animated design is a major plus

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We would love to have a chat and see if you could be a great addition to our team. We've hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
