The Technical Art Director is a lead position in the Technical Art team. While part of the art team, they act as a bridge between the artists, engineers and designers. As a leader, they will oversee large initiatives which can include entire game areas/domains. As a contributor, they are an expert in the technical art field with main responsibilities including art production workflows, tools, pipelines, asset optimization, visual scripting/logic (''schematics'') and shader development.

 

Cohesively work alongside other asset departments (Model, Rig, Character FX, Look Development) to create and apply photoreal and/or stylised textures. Design organic and hard surface textures in order to achieve the desired look of characters, props, and environments. 

 

Creates 3D character rigs and animation interface controls for skeletal motion systems and body/facial deformations. Successful candidates must be knowledgeable in writing utility scripts and core software tools in order to streamline the character set up process

 

Creates, develops and refines all technical aspects of the Maya animation production pipeline. This entails developing and supporting procedures and tools to allow for a streamlined and efficient animation pipeline consisting of character rigging, character animation, simulation, props, layout, cameras, plates, geometry conversions, and general shot asset management. 

 

Sony Imageworks Vancouver is seeking FX Artists! Designs, creates and animates digital effects elements and methodology for computer generated FX animation. Typically creates elements, effects, pipelines, tools and techniques that reflect physical dynamics of natural phenomena (e.g., fire, smoke, water, bubbles, lava, dust, etc.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES • Maintains current systems and implement new systems • Mentors and trains team members • Performs research and development for technical strategy and future systems; define and advocate software solutions and options using SWOT metrics • Provides Tier 3 level escalation support for difficult to solve incidents • Collaborates with IT and pipeline team to resolve cross-department technical problems and diagnose root causes of incidents

 

Creates and builds computer generated 3D models for assigned story elements and designs. Prepares and builds models for characters and stand-ins for layout. Develops prop elements for effects. Creates environmental sets and structures. May focus on developing technical drawings for model productions. Writes, maintains and runs Makefiles, scripts and model databases.

 

Under the guidance of the feature animation production Environment Supervisor or Matte Painting Lead, create digital matte paintings that meet creative direction using live action elements, still photography, concept art, rendered CG elements and digital painted elements.

 

Designs and implements lighting of characters and environments for assigned shots that meet and enhance the given art direction for a production. Able to light multiple types of scenes from simple to moderately difficult. Compositing experience required. Ensures that assigned shots fit the continuity of the sequence. Develops solutions and techniques that meet art/technical direction. Has a clear vision of how art/technology should function.

RESPONSIBILITIES • Provides organization-wide help desk and server support • Assists in addressing business and technical needs • Works independently and in teams on administrative and technical projects • Provisions and maintains employee equipment • Monitors and maintains of a variety of physical and logical systems

Able to create character simulations for multiple types of character features and may have in-depth skills in one area (e.g., hair or cloth). Combines layers of previously created materials (e.g., rendered animation, special effects, graphics, live action, static background plates) to create final images that meet art direction. Integrates foreground, mid-ground and background scenes to extend a set, scene, environment or effect and incorporates characters or digital objects into scenes. Creates seamless transition from filmed footage into composited content. Accountable for meeting productivity and quota targets.

The Assembly & Final Layout Artist is responsible for setting up shots, camera polishing, set dressing, picture composition, and stereo. They ensure that the required assets are installed; check for consistency and continuity of set dressing as well as camera and lensing work. They provide support to all downstream departments throughout production.

 

Creates animated characters and objects that meet required direction. Artist must possess ability to animate both primary and secondary characters by utilizing traditional methods and computer graphics systems to create desired performance of digital characters within a shot.

 

Combines layers of previously created materials (e.g., rendered animation, special effects, graphics, live action, static background plates) to create final images that meet art direction. Integrates foreground, mid-ground and background scenes to extend a set, scene, environment or effect and incorporates characters or digital objects into scenes. Creates seamless transition from filmed footage into composited content.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Creates and designs lighting for complex scenes; develops look for assets, animation files, simulations, and effects elements • Works with supervisors and compositors to ensure that all elements delivered work as needed to achieve the desired look
