Editor (London) – As Equals

The Job

As Equals is a cross-platform CNN initiative dedicated to publishing challenging, engaging, and sustained coverage of gender inequality globally.

As the leader of this team, you will be responsible for driving the strategic vision for the series, hiring and managing a team of full-time journalists in multiple locations, and commissioning, steering, and editing world-class journalism for publication across CNN's platforms.

The successful candidate will have management experience as a newsroom leader and a global outlook, essential to making this series interesting and relevant to a mass-market audience around the world. You will be able to inspire a team and a wider organisation to produce high-quality, impactful journalism, and have experience owning editorial processes around complex and sensitive stories. You will have a deep understanding of digital and social audiences and understand how to build meaningful, direct, and lasting relationships with them.

From January 2021, As Equals will receive financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The series editor role is a fixed-term contract for the duration of the funding period (until January 2024) and will focus solely on gender inequality.

The Daily
• Build, run, and inspire a small team based in multiple locations responsible for producing high-quality journalism on gender inequality.
• Project manage stories and other journalism output with varying timeframes - from spot news and monthly features to longer-term investigations, newsletters, and documentary productions.
• Grow a network of strong contributors either from or living in, the countries As Equals seeks to cover.
• Dive in to edit and shape stories from the team and freelance contributors, ensuring the best quality output.
• Authoritatively own the beat internally and externally.
• Work with different stakeholders across the organization to ensure the best placement of stories across different platforms, from digital to television.
• Publicly represent the series and organization.

The Essentials
• Proven experience as a people manager in a newsroom or similar environment.
• A track record of editing and leading enterprise journalism efforts that start conversations.
• A history of building, and working with, a network of freelance talent (writers, photographers, illustrators, designers, etc.).
• Experience working across teams and with internal and external stakeholders to execute a story.
• A track record of leading ambitious digital storytelling and a desire to produce groundbreaking work that pushes boundaries in terms of format.
• Demonstrable experience in building digital audiences and retaining them.
• Strong technical capabilities including working on different content management systems and news operating systems.
• Knowledge of running journalists and teams in unsafe environments.
• Understanding of journalistic standards and media law.
