OVERVIEW

Across our organization, we’re building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success.

NPR’s Newsdesk reporting team is at the core of our newsroom’s daily coverage, with a multi-platform team of general assignment reporters who can handle any topic, from budgets to baseball. We’re seeking a journalist who can write quickly, conversationally and with precision to boost our overnight news coverage across all our publishing and broadcast platforms. Specifically, this position will be an overnight role to help tell stories that develop in the late evening and watch for breaking stories overnight. When a story breaks overnight, this reporter will report and write for NPR.org, file spots for Newscast and occasionally take a seat in Morning Edition and the Up First podcast. We’re looking for a reporter who can bring a distinctive voice and sense of curiosity to our journalism, melding original reporting with the work of other NPR journalists as well as the best material from outside news sources and social media. This position will be based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities:
• Develop and execute stories across platforms on breaking news, with an emphasis on NPR.org, writing and reporting authoritatively with speed and voice and nuance.
• Develop enterprise story ideas and reporting as assigned for broadcast on newscasts, magazine shows and audio storytelling on digital and social media platforms.
• Consistently and enthusiastically engage with readers and the NPR community in social media venues.
• Engage with news events as they happen, leading attention and conversation on the issues of the day.
• Field contributions from others at NPR, including show hosts, correspondents, reporters, producers and editors.
• Work with colleagues across NPR’s network to provide the best user experience for the NPR audience.
• Ensure that all materials meet NPR News standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, honesty and a relentless pursuit of the truth.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, including early mornings, nights and/or weekends, and to travel to assignments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in journalism.

Required Skills:
• At least four years’ experience reporting or editing national or international news writing on deadline
• At least six years’ experience reporting and writing with an emphasis on breaking news
• Demonstrated excellence in reporting and writing for the Web and for blogs
• Demonstrated excellence in news judgment
• Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of online journalism – reporting, writing, and editing
• Web publishing tools as well as social media and multimedia elements
• Demonstrated ability to cover a variety of cultures
• Demonstrated familiarity with NPR's programs, website and other online outlets
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under tight deadlines and changing priorities/conditions
• Demonstrated, up-to-date understanding of online journalism and best practices.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Must be able to report breaking stories
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system

Preferred Skills:
• Experience covering a variety of beats
