Job Description

Our international efforts continue to grow and Netflix is excited to bring even more of our Non-Fiction Original series programming to our viewers in Europe and around the globe.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Netflix seeks an experienced lawyer to join its London office as a Counsel on the Unscripted Original Series team -- the team behind series such as Queer Eye, Nailed It, Too Hot to Handle and Love is Blind. The successful candidate will provide business & legal affairs services related to the acquisition, development, and production of Netflix's original nonfiction series, continuing documentary series and comedy specials, principally in the UK. This executive will interface directly with third-party production companies and be involved in all facets of multiple third-party productions. The Counsel will report into the Director, Business and Legal Affairs, Non-Fiction Series for the UK and will also work closely with the US-based team.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate should have at least 7 years of development and production experience in unscripted factual television and/or documentary programming, with direct experience negotiating and drafting all forms of agreements, including talent agreements, commissioning agreements and production forms (above-the-line and below-the-line). The successful candidate should also be extremely comfortable dealing directly with productions, as well as communicating across multiple departments within the company situated around the globe (including but not limited to operations, post-production, production finance, marketing, PR, etc.).

The Counsel would focus their time negotiating or assisting with the negotiation of the commercial terms for projects, negotiating and drafting the related legal agreements, and overseeing production-legal and clearance issues (with the support of internal resources). The ideal candidate will have a strong legal and business negotiating/drafting background; a broad understanding of both television distribution (including digital distribution) and the evolving industry as a whole; and knowledge of substantive areas of the law relevant to unscripted series, such as defamation, fair use, copyright and privacy rights. Engagement with the Netflix culture is a must.

A successful candidate will also possess the following:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.
• Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively, think practically and be solution-oriented.
• Curiosity and willingness to tackle matters outside his or her area of expertise.
• Comfort and confidence making decisions, even when the rules are unclear and the issues are of first impression.
