Assistant News Director

Job Description

Responsibilities include:
• Lead daily news coverage agenda
• Responsible for initiating and managing content delivery on all news platforms
• Aggressively pursue breaking news and severe weather
• Work closely with News Director to establish news content, philosophy and direction
• Help lead news department focus on alerting, empowering and protecting our viewers
• Review daily newscasts to ensure quality control and brand compliancy
• Provide feedback to all news staff
• Be a good teacher for younger staff
• Assist News Director in the on-going evaluation of personnel
• Help News Director with recruiting and hiring for news department personnel
• Schedule news staff
• Write copy and edit scripts for on-air and digital
• Jump in and produce when necessary
• Evaluate workflow efficiencies
• Create tactics and strategies to increase demos performance in key target areas for multiple platforms

Requirements:
• Must have a working knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws
• Must have a demonstrated ability to manage multiple hours of daily newscasts on two stations and must have a proven track record of success in building a winning news organization
• Journalism degree and a minimum of five years' experience in news management with noted leadership skills is required
• A passion for social media

• Strong oral and written communications skills
• Broad understanding of newsroom operations and equipment
• Ability to move from high level strategic view of news operation goals to how to enact tactics to achieve these goals

Experience:
• At least 5 years news experience, including management
• Newscast producing experience
• Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
• Proven experience in newscast showcasing and storytelling
