National Geographic seeks aspiring journalists from diverse backgrounds to apply for a rigorous year-long employment opportunity. The successful applicant will spend one year (2020-2021) working on our History Desk mastering newsgathering, writing, and production skills essential to success in the competitive field of digital and print magazine journalism. National Geographic's History Desk is leading outlet for reporting on the human journey: important archaeological discoveries, major cultural landmarks, and a deeper understanding of history and our place in the modern world. We also tell stories about contemporary peoples, cultures, and geographies around the world that help readers gain understanding and insight into our global village. The successful applicant will gain hands-on experience developing stories on history and culture, building research and reporting skills, and improving writing and editing

This is a Project position and employment will continue on this Project (at the company's sole discretion), and in no event shall extend past the completion of the Project.

Responsibilities:

This position requires excellent reporting, writing, time management, and communication skills. Candidate must have keen news judgment and storytelling skills, attention to detail, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and a keen understanding of high-quality digital and print magazine writing.

Will be responsible for developing story ideas and pitching to senior editorial staff, doing rigorous research for stories, conducting interviews, writing and editing for multiple platforms.

Basic Qualifications:
• Minimum one year of relevant professional experience or equivalent educational graduate-level experience
• Demonstrated writing skills
• Proven interest in journalism, production and digital content
• Candidates must have work authorization in the United States through 2021

Required Education
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
