Job Description
WSAV-TV in beautiful Savannah, GA is looking to fill one of the few entry level News and Production positions that still exist in this size market. This job is perfect for a recent graduate or student of film and television, mass communications or journalism that has great training and skills but little or no professional experience. This job has proven to be a foot in the door of broadcasting that has led many to promotions and opportunities in the field. Primary job duties are working as part of the production team airing live newscasts. WSAV produces over 6 hours of live news programming per day. You'll be running teleprompter, working in the studio and editing news video for those and other local programs daily as well as being a member of the WSAV Remote Broadcast Team.

If you are an expert editor on one of the popular NLE packages, you'll have no trouble learning our Bit Central Newsroom NLE system. You'll get scripts for stories and assemble them from raw footage into finished pieces for air under tight and strict deadlines. Turnaround is quick. Sometimes you'll only have a couple of minutes to make decisions to get material edited and on air. Frequently you'll be handling multiple tasks simultaneously. The clock ticking by waits for no one. Failure is not an option.

Your shift begins hours before the newscast airs. You'll be working weekends, middle of the night, early in the morning, during the day, holidays and when there is breaking news and severe weather. WSAV is a 24/7 operation, your jobs duties and shifts can vary with little notice. You must be flexible and willing to work on short notice. If you have other part time jobs or attend school, you must commit to this being your primary responsibility.

But this is just the beginning.
Other duties include upkeep, cleaning and preparation of the studio, operating studio equipment and other advanced broadcast technology. You'll need great computer skills on Windows PC's to operate the teleprompter, the AP ENPS Newsroom software, and the Vinten/Hitachi Robotic Camera System that is part of our Sony ELC Studio Production Automation System. Experience and in depth understanding of wireless audio equipment required. Everything audio in our studio is wireless. You'll learn to check operation of all studio equipment such as robotic cameras, video wall displays, production automation and graphics systems, green screens and LED studio dimmer lighting systems and controllers.

WSAV is the market leader in OB Remote Productions. We need great shooters, audio technicians and mixers, video replay operators, jib operators and grips for our outside productions. You will have the opportunity to learn every aspect of professional remote broadcast productions as part of our team.

Candidates must have better than basic camera skills for consideration. You must be familiar with professional television camera equipment in both ENG and studio configurations. The candidate chosen for the position with very strong photography skills will be given opportunities to shoot news, sports, marketing and commercial projects providing a possible path to full time employment in the future doing that.

If you are a Drone Pilot and ready for FAA certification, that is a big plus. We are increasing the number of pilots on staff so there are opportunities to advance into that role quickly. If you can mix live audio with lots of sources, there is a real need for those skills.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

A Production Assistant must be able to stand, sit, reach, climb, conduct precise telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write business letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions or outdoors during remote broadcasts in all kinds of weather.

In addition, the Production Assistant must be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions. Must be able to climb and work on a 12' ladder. Must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
