Weekend News Desk Assistant - PT

WLUK is seeking an energetic, and creative part-time News Desk Assistant. This is a great way to begin your journalistic career. The News Desk Assistant supports reporters and photographers. Duties include uploading content to our digital platforms, answering viewer calls and monitoring news events. The part-time position is a day shift on weekends, with 2 hours of prep time prior to the weekend. From time to time, there are opportunities to participate in special projects such as election day coverage, breaking news and breaking weather situations. The News Desk Assistant is also supported by a team of journalists and managers.

Skills and Experience:
• Write and post content to station website and social media sites
• Listen to scanners and react to breaking news, make beat checks, monitor web sites and social media, react to developing news
• Listen for and respond to breaking news
• Assist in the efficient operations of the assignment desk

Requirements and Qualifications:
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Basic computer knowledge/word processing skills (Microsoft Outlook)
• General knowledge and interest in local, national and world news
• Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
• Proficiency with Facebook, Twitter and emerging social media platforms
