Job Summary/Description:
Gray Television is seeking a Michigan Capitol Correspondent to cover local, state and national political issues affecting Michigan residents.
This position will work for at least three Gray Television stations covering the state of Michigan: WILX (Lansing-Jackson), WNEM (Saginaw-Flint), and WLUC (Marquette-Upper Peninsula). This position may also appear on Gray stations across the country when covering statewide issues or national political races. The Gray Michigan Capitol Reporter is a Lansing-based position who will work with a photographer/editor to cover the state legislative session, elections, and statewide issues and help grow our presence at the Michigan Capitol. You would be responsible for daily and live coverage for three Gray television stations across Michigan.
NOTE: Candidate will be located out of the WILX-TV offices
Duties/Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
• Coordinate with stations across the state for live shots and coverage of key statewide events and issues. Participate in story selection and play an active role in editorial process.
• Develop and maintain sources and experts at all levels of government.
• Organized and well-versed in keeping track of legislation and be able to summarize and explain it to viewers in an understandable and conversational manner.
• Research, shoot, write and edit news content for on-air, digital, social, and streaming platforms. Must have strong writing, storytelling, and reporting skills.
• Produce and anchor weekly digital political show.
• Supervise and assign work for at least one other State Capitol bureau employee and interns.
• Understand Freedom of Information and Open Meetings laws to file regular requests. Must have excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.
• Ability to travel throughout the state, especially during election cycles, to cover candidates running for state and federal offices.
• While primarily a dayside Monday-Friday position, must be able to work longer hours, different shifts, and/or days based on legislative session and events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Degree in journalism, communications or related field.
• Prior reporting experience.
• Have and maintain clean driving record.
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
