Wild Bus Films is an exciting new production company based on Vancouver Island that operates both in Canada and internationally to deliver high end science and natural history content to global broadcasters. Our recent work includes BBC’s “Earth’s Great Rivers”, BBC’s “Greta Thunberg: A year to change the world”, Netflix’s “Oceans” and National Geographic’s “Queens”. We are a small team but pride ourselves in standards of international excellence.
We are looking for an in-house Director of Photography to join our small but mighty team to work on a variety of international and domestic productions, as well as take the lead shooting WBF development reels and tasters.
We are looking for an individual who wants to immerse into a small but growing business and help our team take WBF to the next level.
You will be the principal cinematographer on a range of shoots determined by our clients and in-house development Producers. Most shoots will involve travel (domestic and international) with potentially long periods away from home.
JOB DUTIES. The following duties will be performed in this position:
- Select and manage camera and sound kit for a variety of productions; identifying what needs to be sourced and knowing how to use the kit;
- Plans, directs, and coordinates motion picture filming;
- Stay across the latest camera and technical innovation of the film and TV industry and find innovative ways to bring new visual flare and looks to our projects;
- Work across a range of productions and development – often simultaneously;
- Help producers with quoting for jobs from a technical standpoint;
- Brainstorm and input creative sessions about how to achieve production and business objectives.

REQUIREMENTS. The successful applicant will possess, at a minimum, the following skills and experience:
- A university degree in film studies or cinematography is required
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in the film industry is required
- A minimum of 1 year of drone operating experience is preferred
- At least 5 camera operator or above credits on series productions or similar for SVOD platforms
- Bring strong creative ideas and visual flare to productions and be innovative in executing the creative briefs
- Being comfortable and trained for working in remote wilderness environments is vital for this role, as it is a track record of shooting high-end science and natural history content for international broadcasters.
- Have filmed natural history behavioral sequences on both long lens and drone
- A strong understanding of the documentary industry in the UK and North America is a benefit
- A proven track record of sourcing and coordinating kit for international shoots
- Hold valid American, Canadian and UK drone licenses or be willing and able to acquire such licenses quickly after employment commences
- A proven track record of working in remote and wilderness locations, with basic training in remote Frist Aid and working around bears and other predatory mammals.
