Your New Role...

An Operations Engineer within Broadcast Engineering and System Technologies (BEST) is part of a 24/7 BEST Command Center some 30 engineers strong. An Operations Engineer wears multiple hats, rotating duties between on-air Quality Control, on-site support and Broadcast-centric Tier 1 Service Desk functions.

Your Role Accountabilities...

This role places an engineer on the front lines of live news production, in direct contact with teams such as Field Engineering, Sales, Newsrooms, Control Rooms, Studios, and to Master Control, managing communications during major events, and on the ground troubleshooting or building out systems for News and Entertainment broadcast facilities. The job includes numerous training and shadowing opportunities, project work alongside partner engineering teams, and chances for career development. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a background in Broadcast, Customer Support, I.T., Computer Science or Engineering.

Quality Control

As a critical component of all live News shows, an Operations Engineer in QC is in constant communication with Control Room and Newsroom staff, ensuring the highest quality for live video feeds going to air and feeds being recorded for later edit and archive. It is QC's responsibility to adjust audio and video levels to meet CNN's standards, synchronize lines, and adjust other aspect ratio or audio channel settings using an array of technology from waveform guides and vector scopes to powerful, integrated touch screen controls.

With eyes constantly on air, an Operations Engineer is also responsible for monitoring the ongoing quality of the outgoing path. If there are any hits, distortions, or other signal problems, engineers in QC will initiate large scale notifications and assist in the investigation.

BCC Service Desk

In the BCC, an Operations engineer acts as part of a Command Center environment, the central nervous system of incidents, service requests, and major activities throughout Broadcast Engineering and Content Supply Chain for CNN and Turner Entertainment properties. An engineer receives incoming calls and tickets, performs first-call Triage and Dispatch on incidents ranging from low priority to On-Air emergencies, monitors services and equipment for a wide variety of systems, and coordinates the communication around Major Incidents which have organization-wide impact to job abilities or air. Resolution of incidents is done through remote control software, excellent communication, or in person for on-site customers. All incidents and requests are logged into an industry standard Service Management tool, alongside a rich Knowledgebase curated, in part, by the BCC. Broad communications are handled through enterprise level notification systems and organizational chat solutions.

Customers include Broadcast Technical Operations, Talent, Journalists, and Editors across multiple bureaus in multiple cities around the world and are supported 24/7.

In addition, Operations Engineers will have the opportunity to shadow with other engineering teams and participate at an implementation level in larger projects. This is often in the form of cabling and equipment install/removal throughout the various Terminal Gear Rooms, Data Centers, and Broadcast Facilities in Atlanta.

Qualifications and Experience...

An applicant for this role must possess a background knowledge of some combination including Broadcast Engineering, Live Video Production, Information Technology, Customer Support, Networking, Computer Science, and Troubleshooting skills.
* Minimum of a two-year Technical Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Broadcast Engineering (or equivalent education / experience / training)
* Computer Repair / Electronic Repair / Software and Hardware Troubleshooting experience
