Job Description
Avalanche is in search of a skilled Environment Texture Artist to enrich our creative team. The right candidate will have a robust artistic vision, a meticulous eye for detail, and a passion for creating compelling and lifelike environments. Working alongside art directors, designers, and technical artists, you'll play a crucial role in bringing our rich game worlds to life.
Your Role Accountabilities…
• Work with fellow texture artists to create a material library that follows the project's artistic vision and is easy to use for our world builders.
• Match the art style defined by our art directors and concept artists. Our ideal candidate is comfortable taking inspiration from multiple sources, including reference images and paint-overs.
• Manage texture and shader efficiency for optimal performance.
• Collaborate closely with 3D modelers and game designers to create materials that fit the architecture and gameplay needs of our levels.
• Create documentation of processes for others to learn from and follow as needed. Encourage the sharing of ideas.
• Process photo scans in Substance Designer for best visual results in-engine.
• Create textures from scratch as needed. This could include workflows that start with digital sculpts or purely Substance Designer depending on the needs of the material.
• Modify your work based on feedback received from art directors and teammates to satisfy visual, gameplay, and optimization needs.

Qualifications & Experience...
• Familiar with modern level editor workflows such as those used in Unreal Engine, Unity, etc. Topics of note include setting up material instances and using layered systems in Unreal Engine.
• Strong proficiency in Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Zbrush, and Adobe Photoshop.
• Ability to create proper UV layouts for assets using both 0-1 and tileable textures. Considers texel density while in this workflow.
• Working experience with baking textures from high res meshes to low poly models.
• Strong understanding of Physically Based Rendering (PBR) pipelines.
• Possesses foundational art skills. Understanding of composition, form, color and light in relation to world materials.
• A desire to improve and learn new skills through research and application in production.
• Motivation to reach out for feedback and adapt to it.
• Strong collaboration skills and willingness to problem solve both on your own and in group settings.
Nice to Haves…
• Photogrammetry experience.
• Experience in development on a title set in an open world.
• Understanding of Nanite, Lumen, and layered material systems.
