POSITION OVERVIEW

The Labs Post Production Supervisor, Doc Edit and Story Lab is charged with overseeing and directing the post production operations for projects at the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Edit and Story Lab.

Working closely under the direction of the Director, Technical Exhibition and Production, the Labs Post Production Supervisor, Doc Edit and Story Lab supports Sundance Institute’s commitment to nonfiction filmmakers globally undertaking feature documentaries on contemporary themes and upholding the craft of independent nonfiction feature editing.

This temporary position works a remote, variable hour schedule from Monday, March 14, 2022 through Wednesday June 15, 2022 and then will work full time out of the Sundance Resort from Thursday, June 16, 2022 through Sunday, June 26, 2022. Sundance Institute will provide meals and accommodations in a shared home when the position is living from the Resort. Extended hours, weekend work, and holidays will be required leading up to and during the labs. Days off once physically working from Sundance Resort will be inconsistent.

Top priorities include but are not limited to…
• Coordinating and planning post-production operations for projects at Sundance Institute’s Documentary Edit and Story Lab.
• Participating and contributing to weekly pre-lab conference calls to assist with planning lab operations.
• Reviewing current inventory and assessing lab equipment needs, cross-referencing with a list of loaner equipment to ensure the acquisition of needed equipment.
• Reviewing all requests for equipment purchases with the Director.
• Conducting research on best practices as it relates to technology workflow and post-production.
• Reviewing previous year’s edit suite layout, technology needs, office supplies, and other expendables with Lab Production Staff and making necessary revisions.
• Working closely with Documentary Film Program (DFP) staff to orient fellows to lab documented guidelines related to post-production for edits on-site and ensuring they are distributed to selected Fellows.
• Thoroughly reviewing selected fellows’ work to prepare for the lab.
• Participating with the Documentary Film Program team on the selection of Contributing Editors.
• Supporting program staff in individual pre-lab orientations with Editor Fellows and Contributing Editors.
• Managing editorial flow and assigned budgets across processes.
• Codifying and disseminating best practices and policies, and enforcing compliance.
• Coordinating volunteer contributing editors and maintaining schedules to ensure flow of services.
• Developing a comprehensive training and facilitating training to ensure Contributing Editors are properly prepared for roles, expectations, etc.
• Conducting testing of all post-production systems and projects prior to Lab to ensure functionality.
• Reviewing previous lab post-production workflows to refine, streamline, and improve efficiency.
• Ensuring clarity of information and good channels of communication are maintained at all times with program, roduction, and Operations teams.
• Managing the media library, including archiving and saving correctly to servers, sending copies to Institute offices.
• Inventorying equipment in lab storage and purchasing equipment as necessary.
• Supporting attending artists in all their post-production needs as necessary, ensuring they have proper materials, preparing hard drives, responding to issues or change requests promptly, etc.
• Ensuring Institute owned and loaner equipment is properly inventoried, checked for damages, returned appropriately (includes tracking) and stored properly.
• Representing the organization when interacting and hosting sponsors, donors, vendors, etc.
• Attending and participating in all meetings, daily production, and wrap.
• Writing a comprehensive wrap report as instructed.

You have the following direct or transferable skill sets:
• Legal authorization to work in the United States.
• 4 years experience in film or tv post-production.
• 2 years experience managing staff, freelancers, or volunteers and leadership skills.
• Ability to design, test, and implement media technology workflow.
• Working knowledge of digital editing equipment.
• Proficient with PC and Mac operation, networking and hardware.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully with all levels of staff and a wide variety of individuals.
• Ability to manage expectations of others with excellent conflict resolution skills.
• Able to lift, carry, and push items up to 50 lbs.
