SVP Market Intelligence and Content Insights
Sony Pictures Television Studios is looking for a strong executive to join our team as SVP, Market Intelligence and Content Insights.
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is one of the television industry's leading content providers, producing, distributing and carrying programming worldwide in every genre and for every platform. In addition to managing one of the industry's largest libraries of award-winning feature films, television shows and formats, SPT is home to a thriving global content business, operating a robust portfolio of wholly-owned and joint-venture production companies across the US, Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, as well as linear and digital channels around the world. SPT is a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Sony Group Corporation.
We are looking for an expert research executive who is a scientist, innovator, and collaborator. Using a coordinated arsenal of data science, primary research, content analysis, and social listening, this executive will empower SPT's development and sales process, support and grow our new and existing franchises, and play a meaningful and visible role in making our television series the best they can be.
The SVP, Market Intelligence and Content Insights is a leadership role (leading a team of approximately 12 employees), reporting into SPT's EVP and Head of Strategy and Operations.
Responsibilities
1) Lead a Center of Excellence on market, customer, and audience insights
Expert on commissioning trends, customer needs, and audience tastes. Using syndicated research, vendor data, social listening, and SPT proprietary data, you will help inform creative strategy and corporate strategy. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Create and maintain audience segmentation maps of SPT's customers
• Develop 5-year commissioning forecasts for Scripted, Non-Scripted, Kids, and Game Show programming for each of SPT's customers
• Create actional gap analyses to help SPT leaders identify areas for content and talent investment
• Capture learnings from studio's interactions with customers
• Partner with Marketing, Data Solutions, and teams throughout Sony ecosystem to expand and enhance collective insights
• Create relationships with network counterparts to understand their content needs, audience segments, and performance metrics
2) Primary Research
Leads all external primary research. It will proactively conduct focus groups and other primary research to optimize departmental development slates, improve the sellability of series concepts and pitches, and understand audiences' views on pilots. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Source and maintain vendor relationships
• Design primary research questionnaires
• Create innovative primary research techniques
3) IP Analysis
Leads analysis of SPT series – current, upcoming, and historical. We are looking for someone to develop innovative approaches to content analysis. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Leverage studio wide tools and data sources to deeply understand content performance and audience engagement
• Analyze adaptation potential of existing IP by looking into audience segments, key themes, and success factors
• Create audience profiles for all SPT series
• Utilize social media listening, including in collaboration with SPT Data Solutions, to understand audiences' needs and test hypotheses about content
• Provide SPT leadership with ratings and audience insights to ensure series renewal
• Partner with SPTS Marketing/Creative Center to enhance pitch decks and sales materials
4) Communicate data-driven insights into crisp, digestible, and influential takeaways for creative colleagues, studio leadership, and talent
We are looking for an influential executive and diplomat to communicate data insights to creative teams and talent; contribute to senior-level discussions about development slates, specific IP, talent, and buyers; and be able to push back when data appears to disagree with instinct.
5) Be an internal and industry thought leader
We are looking for an ambitious insights evangelist who will help SPT become known for key insights about the entertainment industry. Key responsibilities include:
• Cultivate an industry-recognized knowledge base on linear networks and digital platforms and their respective content strategies
• Produce publications/whitepapers to provide internal stakeholders and talent with useful insights while building SPT's reputation as an industry thought leader
Qualifications
Team Leadership
• 12+ years of experience building and leading high-performing, innovative, and agile teams within a media or technology company, with a strong commitment to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Strong ability to create a culture of psychological safety and act as a coach to empower each employee's development
• Experience leading data/research executives as well as creative marketing executives
Research Experience
• 12+ years of experience leveraging quantitative and qualitative research in support of television series, marketing, and sales
• Experience profiling and understanding audiences including segmentation to inform IP strategy and audience engagement
• Deep knowledge of linear and streaming television performance analytics – Nielsen, etc.
• Experience commissioning and managing multi-market qualitative and quantitative research projects
• Experience developing, acquiring, and managing data sources
• Knowledge of data visualization best practices
Industry-Specific Experience
• Expert understanding of TV landscape, including linear networks, digital platforms, and emerging media platforms
• Deep understanding of TV production business, including the major milestones from creative strategy to series delivery
• Expertise in digital (AVOD, VOD, SVOD etc.) viewership measurement
• Soft Skills
• Collaborative and transparent team-builder with experience working in a matrixed, multicultural, and international organization
• Strong interpersonal, consensus-building skills, with ability to communicate and achieve results across multiple audiences
• Strong visual and verbal presentation skills and experience leading and delivering insight at an executive level. Able to clearly articulate complex content to diverse sets of stakeholders and be persuasive in a variety of settings
• Passionate customer advocate
• A lifetime learner constantly pursuing emerging and cross-disciplinary approaches that can enhance the insights delivered to internal and external stakeholders
