GENERAL INFORMATION

JOB TITLE: Staff Writer

DEPARTMENT: Shondaland.com

REPORTS TO: Senior Editor

LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA preferred (New York, NY considered)

The voice of Shondaland champions courage, empowerment, reflecting our culture, and bringing people together.

The Staff Writer will work with Shondaland staff editors to concept of and craft stories on Culture and Lifestyle topics. Examples include: Wellness and Health, Food, the Arts, and national cultural trends. The staff writer will contribute to daily content by pitching and assigning various stories. Three to five stories per week may be typical.

This position is in Los Angeles, CA and reports directly to the Senior Editor. (Location in New York also considered).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Write 3-4 stories a week for Shondaland.com. Consideration is given to longer-reported features that take more time.
• Ability to report out and cover topics ranging from Wellness to Lifestyle (Food, Trends, etc.) to Culture reporting (the Arts, national trends).
• Understand, embody, and write in the voice of the values of Shondaland.
• Research a wide range of topics and broad subjects and have the ability to report out longer features.
• Develop and maintain relationships with experts, thought leaders, and other sources to call upon for quotes and information.
• Work with the Shondaland editors as part of the editorial team to ensure all deadlines are met.
• Concept of new and exciting story angles regularly.
• Pitch stories to editors in weekly editorial meetings.
• Curate Shondaland Instagram Live Author Series by choosing books and maintaining an IG Live calendar of upcoming author events.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
• Experience writing for various publications; writing about a variety of lifestyle topics such as: Food, Wellness, Health, the Arts, and various cultural trends.
• Adept at reporting out stories (crafting reported pieces), working with sources, researching in-depth topics.
• Experience working with an editorial team to take stories from concept to the reporting stage to the editing stage, and through to final publication.
• Critical thinking, organizing, and planning skills to meet regular deadlines.
• Sharpened ability to develop ideas concisely and clearly.
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
• Must have knowledge of AP Style.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
• 3-5 years of writing and journalism experience, penning stories for national outlets. (1-2 years of the experience in a role as a reporter or freelancing as a reporter)
• Must have writing samples that exhibit reporting skills and voice.
• Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in English, Writing, Journalism, or another related field.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and CMS (content management systems).
