Job Description
Principal Character Artist (Star Wars FPS)

Founded in 2010 by the original creators of the Call of Duty Franchise, Respawn was created with the philosophy that when talented people have creative freedom, they'll make extraordinary games that achieve the unexpected. Our shipped titles include critically acclaimed multi-platform games Apex Legends, Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Star Wars™ Jedi: Fallen Order and Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. You can learn more about our studio and values at respawn.com/studio.

In collaboration with Lucasfilm, the Star Wars FPS Team is developing a new AAA FPS in the Star Wars galaxy. Inspired by classic titles like Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, our story-driven single player game is being developed from the ground up leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5. We're combining this inspiration and technology with Respawn's pedigree for making best-in-class shooters to deliver a brand new experience our players will love.

We are seeking a Principal Character Artist with the passion and know-how to help drive the creation of the galaxy's most diverse characters and creatures. As the Principal Character Artist on our Star Wars FPS team, you will help drive our character creation process and play a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining a high quality level. Respawn embraces a highly collaborative and iterative development process, so this role will involve working heavily with a variety of other departments and feature teams. The ideal candidate is an industry leader in their craft who can also help mentor and develop skills with the rest of their team. This position is a challenging and exciting opportunity to bring a wide variety of characters, creatures, and aliens to life.

What you'll do…
• Work closely with the Art Director and Lead Character Artist to establish high artistic standards and techniques.
• Lead the way by developing new production techniques or exploring new technology.
• Assist the Lead Character Artist in training and mentoring other team members.
• Work with Technical and Engineering teams to ensure characters are built efficiently to a high technical standard.

Ideally, you will have…
• Experience shipping at least two AAA games as a character artist and actively involved in R&D and pre-production.
• Excellent understanding of anatomy, proportion, silhouette, color theory, and other artistic fundamentals.
• A mastery of modern character related production software and techniques.
• A solid understanding of rigging, skinning, LOD creation, budgets, and other technical requirements of building optimized content.
• A strong understanding of PBR, lighting, materials, and other rendering related technology and how they apply to character art.
• Experience with facial animation, FACS, photogrammetry or blendshape acquisition is a plus.
• A strong collaborative working style, with an interest in teaching and mentoring.

If this opportunity sounds like a great fit for you, please submit your resume and portfolio and we will get back to you once we have reviewed it.
