Penguin Random House is seeking an adaptable Production Editor to join the collaborative team in the Penguin Production Editorial Department! The Penguin Production Editorial Department works with a variety of titles from prestigious imprints: Viking, Pamela Dorman Books, Penguin Press, Portfolio, Sentinel, Riverhead, Penguin Books, and Penguin Classics.
The Production Editor will oversee a wide range of complex titles, including nonfiction, fiction, business, personal development, history, political texts, and more. Reporting to the Director of Production Editorial, the Production Editor will manage the production editorial workflow from initial transmittal of manuscripts to the final print releases (hardcover, paperback, and ebook).
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
• Prepares and styles initial text transmittals using a custom Penguin Random House Word-based platform
• Hires and evaluates the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, cold readers, and indexers
• Reviews and collates authors' and proofreaders' edits. This work may include additional copyediting, fact-checking, and following up with queries to the editor/author and notes for the designer.
• Copyedits, proofreads, and reviews (e.g., slugs) ancillary material, such as front matter, back matter, cover copy, promotional material, etc.
• Reviews and approves cover and jacket routings
• Performs quality assurance checks on ebooks
• Coordinates regularly with editorial, managing editorial, production, and design departments to see titles through to completion
• Keeps books on schedule and error free under tight deadlines
• Assists team with crashed and/or demanding titles as needed
• Performs various administrative duties, including invoices, system updates, and status reports
Essential Qualifications/Requirements:
• Minimum of three years' experience in a production editorial environment or equivalent editing and project management experience
• Superb copyediting and proofreading skills
• Proven track record of managing large workload effectively and within deadlines
• Ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders across all levels of an organization
• Emphasis on quality of content, attention to detail
• Excellent time management skills
• Proficient in Adobe Acrobat, MS Word, and other Office products; must be able to work and review work electronically using the track changes function in MS Word and mark-up tools in Adobe Acrobat
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
