Job Description

The managing editor manages the production editorial team, creating and monitoring book and span schedules across the three imprints within the company. The managing editor works independently to analyze manuscripts, to perform or direct editing as required, and to track and complete all editorial functions on projects. The managing editor ensures project deadlines are met, budgets are adhered to, fosters smooth and consistent communication across departments, and conformance to Sasquatch Books' standards of quality while being flexible and highly organized.

Responsibilities include:
• Creates and sets all of Sasquatch's frontlist and backlist schedules across three imprints (35 titles per year).
• Works closely with the entire bookmaking team to create a balanced and even workflow amongst departments and staff from season to season.
• Leads weekly production meeting, reviewing schedules for all active book projects.
• Project manages 15–18 titles per year from manuscript to bound book with strong editorial skills (including proofreading, analytical, and organizational skills along with a knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style).
• Preps and codes electronic manuscripts. Reviews all stages of manuscripts, PDF text proofs, and printer proofs.
• Hires and supervises freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers.
• Liaises and works closely with authors from the copyediting to print production stage.
• Works closely with various in-house departments including editorial, production, and design in anticipating and resolving problems.
• Attends relevant department and interdepartmental meetings.
• Reviews and edits marketing materials, including catalogs, ads, and press releases.

Requirements:
• 5+ years experience in editorial production with deep knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style
• Experience managing direct reports
• Proficiency in copyediting visual nonfiction with a passion for…schedules.
• Knowledge of InDesign a plus
• Ability to meet deadlines and maintain high standards of quality
• Seattle-based preferred but not required
