Managing Editor, Penguin Random House Publishing Services
Penguin Random House Publisher Services is seeking a Managing Editor to work on a growing list of titles comprising graphic novels (manga), trade novels, art books, and other publishing products. Reporting to the Director, Publishing Operations, you will create and manage production schedules, maintain publishing metadata, hire and manage editorial freelancers, and oversee copyediting, proofreading, and trafficking of book materials.

As a Managing Editor, you'll play a key role in overseeing the scheduling and day-to-day movement of the front- and backlist titles in production as a valuable member of a very hands-on and collaborative team. In addition, you'll work closely with our freelancers and clients, as well as Square Enix/Kodansha editors, production managers, and creative services colleagues to oversee from start to finish hardcover and paperback titles across a wide variety of categories.
Responsibilities:
• Enter and maintain key metadata for all titles in PRH databases.
• Draft, track, and manage seasonal publishing schedules.
• Set and enforce production deadlines, working closely with both in-house staff and freelance editors and designers.
• Run regular production meetings and work with the editorial and production staff to suggest solutions and make decisions on scheduling issues.
• Recruit, hire, and manage freelancers for editing and production editing tasks. Evaluate freelancer performance, negotiate fees, and review invoices. Traffic production materials to and from freelancers.
• Monitor the quality of freelance work and, in tandem with the publishing director and senior editor, set and maintain guidelines for house style.
• Oversee copyediting and proofreading of book materials for the seasonal lists.
• Copyedit and proofread jacket/cover copy, front- and back matter, text manuscripts/page proofs/bluelines, and other material.
• Work with production manager to ensure proper digital and physical asset management and archiving.
• Work closely with other PRHPS staff to develop new or improved workflows and procedures.
Requirements:
• Previous managing editorial experience or project management experience in an adjacent field
• Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills; familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
• Meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proven ability to build relationships, be a reliable point of contact, and manage the tasks and schedules of others
• Proven ability to meet deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and juggling multiple projects at once
• Proficiency at Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams)
• Familiarity with FileMaker, SAP, and/or other project management software preferred
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat) a plus
• Interest in anime, manga, or video games a plus
• Ability to read Japanese a plus
