Editor/Senior Editor, Hogarth

Hogarth, an imprint of Penguin Random House, seeks an Editor or Senior Editor with a proven track record of successfully acquiring and publishing literary fiction and nonfiction to join our team. Named in honor of Virginia and Leonard Woolf's Hogarth Press, today's Hogarth publishes books by exceptional writers who are deeply engage with the world, with a particular emphasis on new and global perspectives and boundary-pushing voices.

As the Editor or Senior Editor, you will play an essential role in the imprint's growth, acquiring, editing, and publishing books that speak to and represent the diversity of contemporary literary culture, today's readers, and our society more broadly. You will also serve as editor of Hogarth's Instagram account, highlighting and featuring our books and authors in a way that represents our mission and identity. The team is looking for someone with a collaborative spirit and openness to working with others at every step of the publication process. A boutique literary imprint of Random House, Hogarth publishes 10-12 books a year. Our writers include prizewinners and bestsellers such as Sally Rooney, Han Kang, Anthony Marra, Anuk Arudpragasam, Sarah Manguso, Mariana Enriquez, Nawali Serpell, and Fatima Farheen Mirza, with forthcoming publications from Sara Broom, Kiran Desai, Vinson Cunningham, Javier Zamora, and Angie Kim.

The Role:
• Evaluate submissions and identify potential acquisitions, presenting a clear and persuasive argument for a book's literary merits and marketplace potential
• Develop and nurture relationships with leading literary agents and authors
• Edit manuscript and work closely with writers and agents to publish the best version of every book
• Collaborate closely with the Hogarth editorial team on submissions and contribute to the imprint's overall editorial strategy
• Set our social media strategy and edit the Hogarth Instagram account, working with the Hogarth editorial and art teams to create content that supports our publications and the Hogarth brand
• Steer each book through the publication process, from acquisition to transmittal to publication including: writing copy, seeking blurbs and endorsements, shaping the book's messaging and jacket design, and responding to requests from publicity, marketing, and sales, in order to position and publish each book as effectively as possible
• Serve as each book's primary advocate both within the house and outside
• Ensure each book meets every deadline on the road to publication
• Collaborate openly with editorial colleagues in the other imprints of the Random House group, as well as our colleagues in publicity, marketing, sales, design, and production, ensuring each book's successful journey from acquisition to the reader
• Develop and nurture relationships with stakeholders in the literary world, including booksellers, media and social media, as well as our colleagues across the relevant divisions of Penguin Random House

Requirements:
• At least 4-5 years of experience editing and publishing critically acclaimed and profitable literary fiction and nonfiction
• Strong experience editing manuscripts and working closely with authors to develop books over time and across multiple drafts, including structural editing and line-editing
• A track record of acquiring from leading literary agents
• Outstanding verbal communication skills, including the ability to position books and authors clearly and persuasively
• Outstanding writing skills, especially for editorial memos, copy, and internal and external communications
• Strong record of meeting deadlines with effective organization and prioritization skills, direct experience taking multiple concurrent projects from conception to completion, and a high sense of self-motivation
• A passion for literary publishing (both fiction and nonfiction) and a strong understanding of current and past authors and trends, with an ability to place a new book in the larger literary landscape
• Experience with and passion for popular and emerging social media platforms and the ability to set a social media strategy
• A collaborative spirit and openness to working with others at every step of the publication process
• A rich and growing network among literary stakeholders, including writers, agents, publishing colleagues, booksellers, librarians, media and social media influencers, and beyond
