Designer (YA Book Covers) - Random House Children's Books
Random House Children's Books is seeking a Designer to join our Young Adult art team. This is a unique role, focusing solely on Young Adult book covers for all our imprints.
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative individual who understands the teen market and has a passion for designing innovative and marketable covers. The Designer will work on all stages of the book cover process from conception through final design execution and prepress.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and collaborative art team. Some of our most popular titles are One of Us is Lying, The Book Thief, We Were Liars, The Gilded Ones, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, and Dear Martin.
Responsibilities:
• Responsible for effective, high-quality cover design of assigned Young Adult titles (4-6 per season) from concept to final art
• Ability to interpret a cover brief and/or manuscript and communicate design ideas both visually and verbally to Art Director, Editors, and publishing team
• Discover, pitch, and hire new artists for book covers, communicating effectively with artists and agents
• Active and collaborative participant in team meetings with Editors, Art Director and Design colleagues
• Manage all stages of the book cover design process-meeting deadlines, staying on budget, and responding to feedback
• Prepare jacket mechanicals for routing, approvals, and release print-ready files to production
• Partner with editorial, production, managing editors, and other in-house departments with the shared goal of creating the best books in the market
Qualifications:
• A minimum of 2 years design experience, ideally in print publishing
• A portfolio that demonstrates strong design, layout, and typography skills
• Genuine passion for the teen market and Young Adult books
• Ability to prioritize, multi-task and manage time efficiently to meet all deadlines
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) within the Mac environment
• Knowledge of PDF workflow and prepress production is a plus
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, quality, and process
• Problem-solving skills-responsive to feedback, yet able to maintain creative intuition
• Comfortable working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment
