Designer – Penguin Young Readers

Penguin Random House is seeking a Designer who thrives in a fast-paced, creative and diverse work environment. This is an exciting opportunity to create eye-catching covers for a wide range of fiction and non-fiction titles, for both Middle Grade and Young Adult readers.

The Penguin Young Readers Design Group works with most imprints at Penguin Young Readers, including Dial, Dutton, Kokila, Paulsen, Philomel, Putnam, Viking and Razorbill. Our list of renown authors includes Jacqueline Woodson, Sabaa Tahir, Ruta Sepetys, S.E. Hinton, David Yoon and Roald Dahl.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Handle every stage of the jacket and cover design process from concept to production.
• Develop artwork and images with both established and up-and-coming illustrators, photographers, and outside creatives.
• Collaborate with all members of the design, editorial, production, and in-house creative teams.
• Prepare press-ready files and approve printed proofs.
• Prioritize and multi-task across multiple projects, adhere to fast-paced production schedules and meet deadlines.
• Remain current on art and design trends, both in the publishing industry and across popular culture.

The ideal candidate possesses:
• Previous book publishing design experience required.
• An eclectic portfolio that highlights strong conceptual, typography and composition skills. Hand-lettering and/or illustration skills a plus.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
• Pre-press and color printing knowledge a plus.
• A passion for independent creative problem-solving, risk-taking, and collaboration.
• Solid organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Effective communication and presentation skills.
