Associate Editor – RISE x Penguin Workshop

Penguin Young Readers is seeking an Associate Editor to acquire, edit, and collaborate on picture books and board books for the RISE x Penguin Workshop imprint, serving 0-5 year olds. This role will focus on developing books that empower young readers, working with passionate colleagues, expert authors, and exceptional artists.
Strong candidates will come with a sense of purpose, a sense of humor, and a sense of young children. The desire and ability to work as part of a highly collaborative team is a must. In addition to book editing, this is a support role encompassing the entire publishing process from conception through to publication and beyond.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Acquire, editorially develop, and manage a selection of projects from acquisition through to publication.
• Take part in team meetings with the Publishing Director and Art Director 3x/week to brainstorm, review layouts, problem-solve, and strategize, as well as one-on-one meetings with the Art Director to review passes and send notes to authors.
• Manage internal systems and data gathering: request pricing from Production, run profit & loss statements, research competitive titles, generate acquisition / contract paperwork, update the books system, pull sales figures from Bookscan, and stay on top of internal deadlines.
• Log, track, and review submissions with Publishing Director, and follow up directly with agents and authors.
• Write cover copy, catalog copy, and title information sheets.
• Present your projects to sales, marketing, publicity, and executives at the seasonal internal Launch meetings.
• Attend departmental editorial and creative meetings, as well as external meetings with authors, illustrators, agents, and foreign publishers.
• Manage the RISE Instagram account @risebooks.
Please apply if you meet the following requirements:
• Specific interest in and enthusiasm for 0-5 publishing: board books, novelty books, and picture books for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers
• At least 3 years of work experience in children's books (publishing, bookselling, or librarianing)
• Strong interpersonal / communication skills and an interest in working and learning collaboratively
• Superior writing skills with a reverence for clarity
• An organized, linear, and meticulous approach to work
• Strong research skills (as applied to generating art notes, sourcing competitive titles for comparison, and cross-checking subject-specific information per book)
• Consistent follow-up and follow-through, and the ability to time-manage and prioritize a multitude of tasks
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe PDFs, PowerPoint, Instagram, and Twitter, and the ability to swiftly learn new systems
• Experience with / exposure to 0-5 year-olds (from any side: teacher, babysitter, camp counselor, parent, aunt or uncle, etc.)
