Team: Product Development

Status: Full-time/Exempt/Fixed-term

Please note: This position is fully funded through September 30, 2021, and will be renewed on receipt of additional federal appropriations approval annually through September 30, 2025.

PBS KIDS Digital is looking for a Sr. Manager of Technology to oversee the engineering efforts behind our websites, web applications, content management system, and more.

The Ready To Learn Initiative (RTL) is supported through a partnership between PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). It focuses on the development and dissemination of content across media to improve learning, with an emphasis on building career readiness and literacy skills for children ages 2-8. CPB and PBS will partner with producers, career readiness and literacy experts, outreach partners, and evaluators to develop learning content and employ innovative strategies to increase use at home, in the community, and in schools.

Some projects you will be part of:
• A CMS that controls over 50,000 pieces of content

• Web experiences that are viewed millions of kids

• Research and development of the latest web technologies and distribution strategies

What you will be doing:
• Manage, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers

• Architect solutions and execute technical approaches for websites, APIs, and applications

• Pioneer approaches to content delivery with Progressive Web Apps

• Partner with the Sr. Managers of Technology for Services and Gaming to track inter-dependencies and architect solutions to cross-product problems

• Act as a Player-Coach by contributing some code on projects. We expect about 25% of your time to be coding.

• Oversee contractors, vendors, and consultants

• Prototype new features or applications

• Research new technologies, tools, and processes

• Collaborate closely with product owners, project managers, and design leads to establish technical requirements, estimate levels of effort, and plan technical execution

Technologies you should love:
• JavaScript, PHP 7, CSS (SASS), Vue.js, GraphQL

• Amazon Web Services (RDS, Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway, Kinesis, and more)

• Build processes and tools like GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and Bash scripts

What you should have:
• 3 – 5 years experience in engineering management or technical leadership

• Experience managing remote teams of contractors and vendors

• Comfort working on projects that perform under high traffic volume

• Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical groups

• Experience juggling multiple projects and priorities while maintaining a big picture view
