OVERVIEW

NPR's award-winning Science Desk is looking for a Supervising Editor to help us cover the big science stories of the moment, including the latest research and advancements in space, technology, medicine, nature and other general science topics.

This person will be a key-member of the decision-making team on the science desk which is comprised of 40 correspondents, editors and producers working across platforms – news magazines, newscasts, web and podcasts. In addition to the topics above, we cover a breadth of domestic health topics, global health and development and climate change.
Our coverage also explores how two global crises, the Covid-19 pandemic and a warming climate, are disproportionately affecting some communities already vulnerable due to societal inequities.

The ideal Supervising Editor is curious, smart, innovative, flexible and can juggle deadlines, as well as drive enterprise and high impact, human centered, coverage. We are looking for candidates who share a passion for journalism and all things science. This position is based in DC. Will consider remote work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop, assign and edit original and breaking science coverage that lives up to NPR's standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
• Edit compelling stories for both audio and print, often on tight deadlines.
• Supervise at last 3 direct reports, providing consistent leadership of the team, including regular constructive feedback.
• Work collaboratively with team members, other NPR journalists, Member station reporters and editors and external editorial partners in developing high impact projects connected to significant news developments.

QUALIFICATIONS
• At least 7 years of journalism experience delivering to multiple platforms. Three or more years of supervisory experience.
• Knowledge of some of the areas we cover.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
• Ability to identify science stories and trends and frame news in a way that communicates to audiences how it will impact them.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED
• Experience editing for radio preferred but not required. Digital experience is a priority. Familiarity with public media appreciated.
