OVERVIEW

Morning Edition is NPR’s influential, agenda-setting morning news magazine (show program). If you are a creative strategic thinker and journalist with a strong track record in editing and managing projects, and you want to be part of a team that produces a program where ideas matter and smart journalism is the goal, come join us. As Supervising Planning Editor, you will have critical responsibility to have essential knowledge, skills and abilities to lead our hosts, producers and editors in long-form, long-range stories while driving the editorial vision for the show. You will lead teams on breaking news coverage of events in the U.S. and around the world, and ensure that the show is at the leading edge of the conversation across a range of issues & headline stories. You will demonstrate high level decision-making with critical assignments with top-talented hosts, producers and editors as needed. Lastly, this role will develop and implement the overarching vision for news, features and digital content for the show. This position in based in Washington DC and works varied shifts.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Oversee planning and editing of content for air/publication, as well as strategic engagement across social and digital platforms
• Demonstrated ability to make smart decision quickly, in a high-pressure environment, to ensure that our morning flagship properties have the sharpest possible mix of stories.
• Leads hosts and producers in developing story ideas, editing audio and producing news reports, features and special projects.
• Ability to work on the UpFirst Podcast in developing the line-up content.
• Manage planning and discussion of themes, treatments, and forms for content and story approaches, in collaboration with hosts/team
• Guide show toward the future, with an eye towards leading innovation in broadcast and digital spaces
• Provide clear and consistent feedback to direct reports, mentoring to enable achievement of professional development goals
• Monitors show for overall balance, variety of stories and types of pieces
• Collaborates with Executive Producer on future planning and strategic partnerships
• Ensures that all materials aired meet NPR program standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity, and balance.
• Assists with coordinating with desk editors and other NPR departments.
• Collaborate with digital news to maximize show content across all platforms.
• Supervise at least 8 direct reports, including preparing their regular performance reviews, and making effective recommendations regarding any hiring, promotion, and discipline for these positions.
• This position works a variety of shifts including Sunday – Friday and overnights.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience

REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least 2 years of experience managing / mentoring staff
• At least 10 years of journalism experience
• Proven experience maintaining high journalistic standards on multiple projects simultaneously, under stringent timeframes and changing/priorities/conditions
• Demonstrated ability to work as decisive leader, as well as a collaborative team member
• Considerable skill in both news and feature editing
• Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into actionable tasks and delegate effectively.
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
