OVERVIEW
A Production Assistant helps create content for reporters, hosts, producers/editors for the broadcast and podcast. They pitch story and interview ideas, conduct research, help arrange interviews, write copy for hosts.
The ideal candidate will be excited by news and energized by tight deadlines. Able to work a variety of shifts, and eager to engage audiences on all platforms with smart, insightful content.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Edits audio and drafts copy for air/publication
• Prepares scripts and other materials as required
• Builds sub-sections of program by editing, scripting and linking two or more related pieces, music and other elements
• Goes on location (solo, or with reporters or hosts) and prepares/files material for air/publication
• Stays current with major stories and regularly pitches ideas for interviews and pieces, chasing a range of guests to actively contribute to our diverse sourcing efforts
• Conducts research and assists in arranging interviews, booking guests and handling associated logistics for tapings
• Pre-interviews guests and prepares research material for hosts
• Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
• EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least one year experience in broadcasting /news journalism
• Ability to edit audio on digital editing systems and operate self-op production facilities
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Ability to coordinate and collaborate efficiently with hosts and colleagues at NPRHQ and NPRW, as well as other locations
• Ability to collect, organize and disseminate information effectively
• Demonstrated writing ability with an emphasis on clarity, economy of phrase and a strong grasp of the rules of grammar
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
PREFERRED SKILLS
• Previous experience in daily news broadcasting and/or podcasting
• Fluency in multiple languages
• Previous experience producing in and operating digital audio self-op facilities
• Digital media skills, including proficiency in social media as a tool for topic research, news-gathering and audience interaction.
