This is one of two main, full-time Editing positions for NPR's Newscast unit. The position involves editing anchor copy for twice-hourly national broadcasts as well as reporter spots for the most listened-to morning-drive content in Public Radio with weekly audiences of more than 26 million. NPR newscasts are the most downloaded short-form podcast in the U.S (Triton Digital podcast rankings). In addition, the top-of-the-hour newscasts between 6am-10am, ET are repurposed as Visual newscasts distributed to Amazon Smart Speaker devices and other digital platforms so in addition to the broadcast component of the newscasts, there are large digital audiences as well.
Editing: Edits Newscast anchor copy and material submitted by NPR correspondents, member-station and freelance reporters.
• Copy-editor for top and bottom-of-the-hour newscaster copy for broadcasts between 6am to noon, ET.
• Edits reports from NPR staff correspondents, station and free-lance reporters when necessary, in coordination with other desk editors and as assigned by the Newscast Producer
• Emphasis on accuracy in regard to facts, historical background, pronunciations- with strong and fast research skills to ensure mistake-free broadcasts
• Has a deft touch balancing phrasing and grammatical/syntax issues while respecting the anchor's voice and approach to broadcast delivery
• Attentive to copy-timing factors to allow anchors to hit hard-posts in the broadcast.
• Has an awareness the newscasts are being repurposed as visual digital content and factors the copy-writing impact on the visual presentation
• Provides editorial continuity for the proceeding news shifts
• Monitors special events coverage and other feeds pertinent to breaking news such as news conferences and hearings
General Information:
The hours of work for this position are 4am to noon, ET, Mondays through Fridays. The successful candidate for this position will be a major player in the Newscast unit's content standards, quality control and workflow. Additional expertise in digital/visual content development is a plus as the Newscast unit maintains and expands its presence on digital platforms.
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skills:
• Strong copy-editing skills
• 5 years of experience in live broadcasting
• 5 years of experience in editorial decision-making
• Proven ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
• Maintaining high journalistic standards, including objectivity, balance and fairness
• General historical and political knowledge and well-versed in news and current events developments
Preferred Skills:
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
• Experience working in a Slack-based workflow environment for communications and editorial exchanges
• Experience working with NPR proprietary software such as Newsflex and MTE
Top-flight research abilities using
This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum salary for this position is $90,000.
