OVERVIEW

Weekend All Things Considered is NPR's influential, agenda-setting weekend evening news magazine show, hosted by Michel Martin. Each broadcast offers stories and reports from NPR correspondents based throughout the United States and the world. The host interviews newsmakers and contributes reporting of their own.

As head of this vibrant news magazine program, you will produce a show where ideas matter and smart content is the goal. You will lead and inspire a talented team of journalists creating unique and unforgettable stories, not only for broadcast but for all of NPR's platforms.

The ideal candidate for this position combines superlative journalism, extensive experience leading and programming a broadcast news show, with an ability to think creatively about the role of journalism in a rapidly changing digital universe.

This role reports directly to the Vice President, News Programming.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise planning and production for weekend evening news magazine and weekly podcast.
• Establish editorial vision for Weekend All Things Considered
• Lead by example; inspire staff to produce consistently compelling, engaging and creative programming
• They should develop a digital social strategy that uses Weekend All Things Considered staff, to contribute to the overall NPR news strategy
• Ensure that all material aired meets NPR standards and practices, including standards of fairness, completeness, independence and impartiality
• Create and monitor efficiency of production schedules
• Partner with other NPR departments, including editorial desks, Marketing, Member Partnership, Legal, Development, Sponsorship and People Partner team
• Manage and monitor annual budgets for the program
• Supervise at least 8 direct reports, including preparing their regular performance reviews, and making effective recommendations regarding any hiring, promotion, and discipline for these positions.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience

WORK LOCATION: This is an onsite role at our headquarters in Washington, DC

REQUIRED SKILLS
• At least 3 years experience as a supervisor
• At least 8 years experience as a reporter, editor or producer
• Demonstrable news judgment - specifically, the ability to identify significant news stories quickly, gather stakeholders, define strands of coverage across successive news cycles, and help lead an evolving process
• Demonstrated ability to build networks of contacts with their team from a key area of news coverage (e.g. politics, foreign affairs, business, culture)
• Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully, taking into account multiple perspectives, while plotting a clear course forward
• Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas, to assimilate and organize large amounts of information, to deliver multi-pronged projects.
• Proven track record in working well inside large teams in pressurized environments.
• Proven track record in setting editorial priorities, and managing a team to deliver newsmaker interviews.
• Demonstrated experience working with and managing highly creative talent.
• Excellent ability to train, coach and develop staff.
• Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, even in complex situations.

The anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $153,000-$180,000.
