The Morning Edition and Up First podcast team are seeking a skilled, creative journalist to join its ranks as Editor I/II.

The right candidate for this position is interested in daily news and is eager to deliver the freshest, most important stories to listeners to start their day. They should also want to understand the needs and wants of various audiences.

The Editor I/II develops and pitches timely, story ideas for original program content for NPR's morning flagship program. This person uses established connections to book timely, impactful interviews. The Editor I/II writes and edits scripts for stories, interviews and other broadcast programming, including breaking news coverage. They plan and manage projects and initiatives such as series and host field trips. The Editor I/II provides editorial support to the host in preparing for interviews and rewriting scripts. This person also offers editorial guidance of show and podcast content/reporting while upholding NPR's standards and practices. The Editor I/II must be available to work a variety of shifts, including overnight, swing and dayside on a rotational basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Tracks ongoing flow of news and recommends specific stories, guests and areas of coverage.
• Books timely, informative interviews for show and podcast.
• Conceptualizes, writes and edits news and feature content, for on-air and digital.
• Responsible for editorial integrity and quality of air product, ensuring that all materials on air and online meet NPR standards and practices.
• Maintains external relationships with sources, potential show/podcast guests, freelancers and experts, member station news staff and journalists from other media.
• Plans and edits large projects including domestic and international host trips.
• Maintains internal relationships with other members of the program staff and contributors and with other NPR program and desk staff.
• Works various shifts, as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned, including the possibility of newsroom rotations to support other NPR news magazines, newscast unit, news gathering desks, programming or other editorial teams as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, or writing-intensive discipline and/or equivalent work experience

REQUIRED SKILLS

Skills for Editor I:
• At least four years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer.
• Radio broadcast experience.
• Demonstrated ability to edit news copy.
• At least one year of experience in editorial decision-making.
• Understanding of journalistic ethics
• Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate news coverage.
• A broad range of general news knowledge.
• Demonstrated writing ability.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously and changing priorities/conditions.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability and willingness to travel.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

Skills for Editor II:
• At least six years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer.
• Radio broadcast experience.
• Thorough knowledge and demonstrated skill in news-writing techniques.
• Considerable skill in feature and copy editing.
• A minimum of two years of experience in editorial decision-making.
• Understanding of journalistic ethics
• Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate news coverage.
• A broad range of general news knowledge.
• Demonstrated writing ability.
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously and changing priorities/conditions.
• Expertise in editing shows under breaking news conditions.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability and willingness to travel.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Editor II skills Preferred
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system
• Demonstrated understanding of, and familiarity with, web producing, podcast planning and social media platforms
• Proficiency in another language than English such as Spanish, Mandarin or Arabic.

This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum annualized salary for this position is $ $95,000.00 - $102,500.00.
