OVERVIEW

PR is seeking a highly-skilled editor to work on its daily afternoon news podcast, Consider This. The ideal candidate should have a background in audio news journalism, and be able to script and edit podcast episodes on deadline. For the first six months in this position, the editor will play a leading role in shaping the podcast's weekend agenda, work with host Michel Martin on in-depth interviews, and contribute pitches to the weekly radio program. After the weekend launch, this editor will work with the broader Consider This team to maintain the podcasts publishing schedule over a six day period. This candidate should have familiarity with NPR's on-air and on-demand news coverage.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Edits episodes of the Consider This podcast for style, narrative flow, factual accuracy and tone.
• Edits and helps script elements for All Things Considered and Weekend All Things Considered that can be used in the Consider This podcast.
• For the first six months, helps to launch and execute weekend episodes of Consider This.
• Coordinates with broader Consider This team, to ensure coverage is fresh and timely.
• Listens to and scouts for NPR news coverage that can be repurposed for the Consider This podcast.
• Tracks ongoing flow of news and consistently generates timely, news-focused and well-thought-out story/interview ideas, generating assignments for self and others.
• Responsible for editorial integrity and quality of products, ensuring that all materials meet NPR standards and practices.
• Maintains internal relationships with other members of the staff and with other NPR programs and desk staff.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred.

PRODUCER I REQUIRED SKILLS
• 3-5 years of experience in podcasting and/or radio broadcasting.
• Ability to edit audio scripts decisively, on deadline.
• Strong storytelling sensibilities, an ability to identify anecdotes that can bring a larger idea or research finding to life, able to restructure a story to enhance clarity and flow.
• An interest in and general awareness of news.
• Experience and demonstrated commitment to fact checking.
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
• Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, including a Wednesday through Sunday schedule, for at least the first six months.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating, at all times, respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability to handle complex projects with little guidance at high journalistic standards.
• Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

PREFERRED SKILLS
• Experience booking guests on deadline.
• Digital media skills.
